Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 40

Laixia was swayed at that moment.

“He offset the erased space?”

No, that was not right. He did not offset it—he defended against it!

Had he offset it, Xi En would have had to cast powerful magic that was no weaker than hers to be able to achieve that. He did not do that. He really just defended against her magic.

Could it mean…

“He has… resistance skills!?”

Resistance Skills—these were skills of the highest class in the defense line of skills. This was because skills in the defense line were commonly types that increased defense when the user suffered from damage dealt so that the damage dealt would not be able to reach the user.

For example, if a person’s initial defense could only take a Lv. 10 opponent’s attack, the person’s defense would be elevated and could take an attack from someone in Lv. 20 or Lv. 30 when said person acquired a skill of the defense line.

Resistance skills were different.

Resistance skills did nothing to add to the user’s defense, nor would they let the user suffer from damage dealt. It achieved the purpose of defense through resisting, directly reducing the damage dealt on the user.

The former and the latter were two completely different cases.

For the former, no matter how much defense was added, it would be broken through when one ultimately met with an attack that exceeded the strength of said defense.

AS for resistance skills, they could reduce the effect of the damage itself no matter how powerful the opponent’s attack was. The higher the skill level, the more reduction on the damage was achieved.

In other words, the former had a limit to it, while there was none for the latter. Whether it was Lv. 1 damage or Lv. 100 damage, the latter could reduce it all the same.

It was just that resistance skills were incredibly difficult to acquire. One had to endure damage incessantly to the extent of resisting and being immune to certain types of damage.

This was why resistance skills were the hardest to acquire among skills in the defense category but were, at the same time, the most powerful defense skill.

For Xi En to be able to resist magic that was erasing space, he must have either cast a rare exclusive or special skill or used a legendary magic object. The only other explanation left was that he had acquired a resistance skill that could reduce magic damage.

The problem was…

“That’s high-level magic cast with Lv. 7 Spatial Magic!”

It was understandable that a resistance skill could resist partial damage but to totally negate it, how high must the skill level be in order to achieve that?

It had to at least be on the same level of Spatial Magic, that was Lv. 7, to be able to do what it did.

Laixia had an exclusive skill helping her out too. Other than exempting her from chanting, it enhanced magic.

Hence, it was impossible Xi En did what he did unless he had leveled his resistance skill to Lv. 8 or Lv. 9—but this man was only in Lv. 10!

How could he level such a high-level and high-difficulty skill when he was just in Lv. 10?

“Then he must’ve used his exclusive skill or the power from the Sacred Sword.”

It was said that the Sacred Swords of the Warriors had various baffling effects, such as it could increase the user’s level, it could upgrade the user’s skills, or it could resist damage for the user like a resistance skill, making them immune to a certain degree of damage.

The legends had it that when the Warriors and the elites of the demons fought, the Warriors were immune, to a certain extent, to the attacks of the demons no matter how many there were based on the Sacred Sword’s protection.

This rang especially true to the Warrior who had beat the Devil a millennium ago. That Warrior had been immune to half of the damage dealt to him by anyone.

The fact itself was still taken as a legend to this day, written in books of wonder and even various novels.

Since there was a precedence, Xi En must have used his Sacred Sword.

Laixia believed so, but she could not help gazing at the parcel Xi En carried on his shoulder. There was no sign of it being opened.

It wavered her again.

Xi En, who saw her uncertainty loud and clear from the ground, felt his eyes twinkling.

“What a good chance!”

He should pursue her hot on the tracks when she was faltering. Xi En decided without feeling any remorse or guilt.

Meanwhile, Laixia seemed to have brushed her hesitations aside as she puffed out a breath.

“Looks like it’s not just the Sacred Sword. Your exclusive skill is pretty powerful, too,” she said.

In the end, she had still summed the reason to the strength of the Warrior’s exclusive skill.

“Like you said, I don’t think I’m able to take you down.” Laixia took a meaningful glance at Xi En and said, “You’re more special than I’ve thought. Perhaps even the Warrior who defeated the Devil a millennium ago…”

Laixia stopped before she sighed.

“That’s all for today then.”

She kept her mana away, recovering to her initial state from the frosty expression.

“Are you escaping?” Xi En pressed.

“Do you want to make me stay?” Laixia retorted. “Better not. Even when you’ll win using the Sacred Sword, it’s absolutely impossible that you can stop me from leaving.”

She had Spatial Magic, after all. She needed only to move the space, and she could easily leave the battleground.

“But you don’t have to worry about me running away. I just don’t want to keep fighting you.”

Laixia fished out an envelope that looked very much like an invitation from her chest and tossed it toward Xi En.

Xi En saw the scene and… let the envelope fall to the ground.

“Why didn’t you take it!” Laixia groused.

Xi En’s answer was pointed. “Isn’t it stupid to fetch something an enemy who wants to kill me just now tossed?” he countered.

According to the atmosphere set just now, maybe it looked the best on him to naturally catch the item. It was what usually happened in novels, but Xi En used to think when he read last time, ‘What if the said item is a bomb?’

He was unconsciously reluctant.

“You!”

The infuriated Laixia heaved, her chest attracting Xi En’s gaze. He had to give it to the girl that her figure was really good.

“Never mind!” she said through gritted teeth. “I’ll return to Lamigione. If you want to see me, come to me at the address written above!”

As if still worried that Xi En was going to act out of the norm again, she nagged, “Remember to come! You’ll regret it otherwise!”

With that, she turned and vanished as if she melted into space.

Xi En stared at the spot where she disappeared for a long time before finally sagging his shoulders. He shifted his gaze and looked at the invitation that had dropped to the ground.

“Regret?”

He had the feeling that he would regret it instead if he did go to her.

“It feels like getting involved in a new trouble, honestly.”

Xi En did not forget that Laixia had mentioned about ‘running away’ to Lamigione when she appeared.

“Getting acquainted with a fugitive?”

Trouble.

Big trouble.

So…

Swoosh!

A handful of soil flew up and buried the obvious invitation.

“Problem solved.”

Like nothing had happened, Xi En shook his body loose and turned to leave.

After he left, however, a shadow appeared silently to pick up the invitation from the ground. The girl in the black robe was silent for a long time, watching Xi En leave.
