Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 19

Translator: EndlessFantasy Translation Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation

It was said that when this world first came into existence, Omnipaltansen had only two races, the deities and the demons.

They appeared in this world almost at the same time. As if they were born enemies, they were already battling each other from the start.

The demons were innately powerful, while the deities had their strengths too. The deities, in contrast to the demons, were not a race born to fight.

The deities could do a lot of things. They could forge the earth and create lifeforms. However, when it came to battling, they were, somehow, inferior to the demons who were naturally destructive.

Furthermore, the deities’ numbers were limited.

Usually, the gods tended to their own business. There were various areas which they had to oversee such as: life, nature, destiny, health, harvest, intelligence, culture, et cetera. It was difficult to assign a god to each area as there were not that many gods. Furthermore, many of them handled the same tasks. Besides, the number of deities had already been fixed since the beginning. Only when a god had fallen was it possible to get a replacement.

As it was, the number of the deities was limited.

The demons, on the other hand, were not restrained in their numbers. As time passed, their numbers grew and the race flourished. At a later stage, they overwhelmed the deities.

To battle against the demons in such situations, the deities began to create other races such as the humans, elves, orcs, gnomes, and others. They were given guidance and allowed to flourish to ultimately defend themselves against the demons.

It was not like the demons sat around idly to watch themselves get decimated. Subsequently, they created magic and monsters.

Thus, both magic and monsters were actually the work of demons.

That was how they were all related to the symbol ‘M’ which resembled the horns. Even mana came about from the demons. It was evident how the demons were stronger compared to the deities.

Despite the creation of the monsters by the demons, they were not as omnipotent as the deities. The monsters which they created had a low level of intelligence that even their creator, the demons, were sometimes unable to control those which had gone berserk. Hence, the monsters reproduced and multiplied in the world unrestricted and untamed. Sometimes, they even attacked the demons.

As a result, the demons could not subdue the deities even when they had the magic and monsters. At the same time, the deities created systems of magic like divine magic and ancillary magic. Consequently, both races ended up in a stalemate.

“But overall, the demons are still more powerful than the deities.”

Sitting at the conjured tea table, the Goddess rambled on as she sipped the aromatic black tea.

“So, to fight the demons, the deities initiated a ceremony to summon the Warriors. We battle the demons with Warriors of special characteristics whom we summon from the alternate universe. Our final goal is for the Warriors to defeat the Devil, the king of demons.”

The Goddess narrated to Xi En, seated opposite her, who seemed to be focused on tasting the black tea.

“We gods are able to do quite a number of things, but we can’t directly give power. Hence, we have high hopes for the Warriors who have the Sacred Swords and powerful exclusive skills, wishing that one day they’ll be able to defeat the Devil.”

As they continued drinking tea, the Goddess clarified various matters to Xi En who then had further questions such as…

“Why can’t the gods give power directly?” Xi En asked.

The Goddess answered frankly, “Because the levels and skills are concepts embedded in the Truth. Not even the gods can interfere with that.”

The Truth referred to the laws of the world, also known as the World’s Truth.

“The deities, demons, humans, and monsters all have levels and skills. According to their quality, talent, and potential, they show varied development in each aspect. These concepts of the Truth govern the rules of the world. The deities can only intervene in phenomena and other matters, but the laws of the world. We can’t interfere with the Truth itself,” the Goddess explained.

“Of course, we can meddle within a range that the Truth allows, like using magic to intercede the Truth. Magic is a force which is utilized to manipulate phenomena and objects in the world.”

“Certain magic weapons, objects, and potions can temporarily increase the skill level and individual abilities accordingly. That Sacred Sword of yours belongs to this category.”

“But the interference is only within a range that the Truth permits. If it upsets the balance too much, it won’t be allowed regardless.”

It was just like how the gods awarded humans with weapons or objects which could enhance their strength and could give them “Blessings”, but they could not upgrade a person directly. Otherwise, no one would want to level up. All they need to do is just to ask the gods.

The weapons or objects that could upgrade one’s level directly did not exist in this world.

“Until now, the weapons and objects which can increase levels are special. It’s found only in the Sacred Swords of those Warriors who come from the alternate universe. In this world, the most powerful objects can only upgrade a certain skill’s level or an individual’s partial abilities.”

“This is probably because you guys don’t belong to this world in the first place, so you may somehow deviate from this world’s intrinsic Truth settings?”

This was perhaps the same reason why most alternate universes’ Warriors were able to awaken incredibly powerful exclusive skills. That was why the gods wanted to summon them.

“It’s a pity that not every person in the alternate universe has the quality to become a Warrior. Otherwise, all of them would’ve been summoned here, I suppose,” the Goddess said nonchalantly.

Xi En rolled his eyes but remained puzzled.

If that was the case, did that not mean that he was summoned here to become a Warrior because he was special and not because he was randomly picked?

“That’s precisely the case.” the Goddess smiled, reading Xi En’s mind. She continued, “At the most, no more than ten Warriors had been summoned to this world since the beginning of time.”

It implied the scarcity of those who possessed the quality to become a Warrior from the alternate world. Xi En happened to be one of them.

“By the way, the Warriors who have been summoned in the past don’t come from the same world you do.”

The Goddess made another shocking revelation.
