Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 15

Translator: EndlessFantasy Translation Editor: EndlessFantasy Translation

As to what happened next, Xi En would never know. At any rate, he could hazard a guess.

“If I could, I truly wish my life experience in the alternate universe would go as smoothly as an ordinary person’s.”

As Xi En mulled over the thought, the excitement was gone ever since he left the forest .

Basically, he did not have a high profile. Although he had forgotten the things in his previous life, he was still himself character wise. So, he knew very well the kind of person he was.

Xi En was inquisitive about new things, but he did not like much development or exciting matters. If he could, he wished to spend his days quietly without being melodramatic. God forbid if he was extraordinary. He wished to blend in with the crowd and observe placidly all things new and foreign to him.

On the contrary, if something untoward happened, it was not like Xi En would lament and denounce the world. Neither would he evade the situation. He would just accept it as it was, as something inevitable.

For this reason, Xi En felt quite comfortable believing in being reborn in an alternate universe. He could accept it and displayed his curiosity when it was appropriate.

He was exceptionally adaptable, or one could say that he was good at facing reality head on. He was also good at finding joy amidst hardship. Regardless of his curiosity about his profession as an Adventurer or the culture and denizens of this alternate universe, Xi En did not wish to be the center of attention. He was not like the protagonist in a novel, passionate about making a name and career for oneself in an alternate universe, leaving a legacy behind, or utterly changing the ordinary and boring life of his past.

Simply put, Xi En just wanted to live his life quietly in peace.

He was reborn in an alternate universe with a second chance in life to become a so-called Warrior. Even then, when he was asked to defeat the Devil by the Goddess, he did not want to do it with much publicity.

If he had a choice, Xi En wished to be an ordinary Adventurer who completed various missions and gradually raised his level and capabilities. When the time was right, he would then seek and defeat the Devil to accomplish his goal.

Xi En hoped to defeat the Devil in a quiet manner, unbeknownst to others. By the time the public knew of it and were shocked or flabbergasted, no one would be the wiser that Xi En was the one behind it. He could not be bothered with the merit or fame but would continue to live his second life in private in this world.

This was what he wanted to do.

For those who were ambitious, they did not think much of Xi En’s wish. He was reborn in an alternate universe as a Warrior with all the advantages, yet he had no aspiration. It was indeed an utter waste.

There were some who fantasized about having a similar life as Xi En’s, transmigrating as the protagonist into an alternate universe and living an interesting fanciful life. One might think that Xi En was abominable for being indifferent to an awesome life that others could only dream of.

Nonetheless, Xi En was just how he was. He was not one to look for thrills or fame and success, he just wanted a prosaic day-to-day existence for the rest of his life. He would be content.

“Make a living from being an Adventurer. Later, if I’m able to, I’ll travel around this world to see interesting new things, and I’ll upgrade myself gradually. Can’t I have a life like that?” Xi En sighed as he roamed the busy street.

Someone brushed past him, overheard what he said, and stopped abruptly.

“Hey, Adventurer, you seem to have something interesting to say?”

A melodious voice drifted toward Xi En. He was taken aback, stopping in his tracks and turning to look toward the source of the voice.

He was stunned by the sight of a pretty young girl.

She looked seventeen, perhaps eighteen years of age, just one or two years younger than Xi En. However, she was tall, reaching a hundred seventy centimeters in height. She exuded a noble air and was out for a walk, seemingly the daughter from an elitist family.

The girl had luscious long black hair with red eyes. She wore a dress which befitted her elegance. Although the dress did not appear extravagant, it seemed like a princess’ outfit due to the girl’s beauty and finesse.

One was usually judged by how one dressed. Clothes added flair and accentuated one’s style. It was amazing to witness how this girl’s grace was reflected on the dress she wore.

Anyway, the girl was munching on a snack which looked like a flatbread in a torn wrapping. Her gaze was focused on Xi En. It seemed as if she decided to talk to him on a whim.

“You’re an Adventurer, right? Don’t all Adventurers hope to make a name for themselves?” the girl asked curiously.

She was not wrong.

In reality, most Adventurers wished to make a name for themselves. They would then be noticed by the nobilities and royals, so they could receive better commissions for the quests they undertook in terms of the level, difficulty, and reward.

Fame was what the Adventurers wanted the most. Only with fame could they command attention and have opportunities to make money and finally create their legacies. It was what every Adventurer was after.

Almost everyone had ambitions to be in this profession. The main factor being the Adventurers who were popular and successful were treated like big-shot celebrities. They would have immense influence and gain the warm welcome of nations. In the process, they would be wealthy, famous, and prestigious.

For most ordinary folks or even the nobilities, to become an Adventurer was worthy of aspiration.

In this case, the girl’s curiosity was piqued by Xi En’s contradicting opinion.

It was just that…

“… Who are you?”

Xi En was silent for a bit before posing the question suspiciously.

He did not get ahead of himself just because he had attracted the attention of a pretty girl. Neither was he at a loss for words after being suddenly accosted by her. He was not even elated over it. Of all the things he could have done, Xi En expressed his doubts without any tact at all.

The girl arched a brow and put down the snack in her hands.

“Are you trying to get to know me?”

The girl asked in a coquettish manner.

“But you have to know, not everyone can make me reveal my name.”

The ambience changed subtly with the girl’s reply.
