Why Defeat The Devil? - Chapter 13

“Level 10 human who’s 20 years old? Without a single skill?”

The staff spoke out loud in surprise.

Seeing her astonishment, Xi En’s heart sank.

“What is it? Did something strange happen?”

Xi En asked the staff in feigned calmness and a confused tone as if he did not know what had just happened at all.

“No, there’s nothing odd,” the staff replied with a smile, but Xi En was not believing it.

He then began querying the staff with the hope of not exposing himself as someone who lacked the common knowledge of this world. He tried his best to probe for more information.

It was tough work but Xi En could only do so much for now. He did not want to disclose his abnormality just yet, especially the level of his knowledge. If he showed an overt sense of naivety, he might be ridiculed or exposed as a result.

After some painstaking probing, he finally understood the situation.

According to the guild’s staff, every lifeform in this world was at some level. It was the same for the deities. The higher the level, the more powerful the abilities and strength in all aspects. Everyone began at Level 1 and, with progress and experience, advanced gradually. The highest level one could go was Level 100, but not everyone could reach the peak.

It depended on one’s potential and innate quality. Some people leveled up slowly while others leveled up fast. Some could continue reaching higher levels while some stopped advancing with time and remained stagnant at their level.

Due to this fact, people who could level up higher in their youths had a greater stature in Omnipaltansen.

Battling was the main method to level up since it involved gaining more experience. One could level up after going through sufficient battles and training. If it were an easy opponent, the level-up rate would be slow. Hence, the best level-up method was to battle an opponent of similar or higher capability. It was especially effective to obtain a higher level by engaging in a deadly battle with monsters.

Other than that, training and drills helped also. As long as getting new experiences were involved, it would lead to an increase in one’s level.

Consequently, any race could reach a certain level at the adult age. As long as their innate quality and potential were considered normal, anyone from any race would be at Level 10 upon coming-of-age. In other words, a human should be able to reach Level 10 by 15 years of age. Those who reach Level 10 at 20 years of age were most likely below average in their potential.

Of course, this was neither surprising nor shocking.

There were Adventurers who refused to stay ordinary. Despite being less talented with a low potential, they still wanted to be Adventurers. Hence, they would battle monsters, doing their best to upgrade themselves. It was not uncommon to see human Adventurers who only reached Level 10 at the age of 30.

Nonetheless, it was mind-boggling indeed to have no skill, yet he was able to achieve a Level 10.

Skills were the possession of abilities with various effects. With some talent and fulfillment of the prerequisites to obtain a skill, one would be able to master a skill, then to upgrade the skill level using the SP obtained from leveling up.

The only skills in this world which could not be mastered through learning were the exclusive and special skills.

An exclusive skill was a unique skill in one’s possession. It would be unlike any other skill. Some people might have it innately, while some others might get it through a sudden awakening. The effects of an exclusive skill varied. In fact, there were a few exclusive skills which were utterly useless.

On the other hand, a special skill was acquired under a special condition. Its effects varied as well. In this case, “Blessings” was classified as one such skill.

Both types of skills could not be leveled up. Both displayed their maximum effects once the skills were in one’s possession.

The skills that could be leveled up were similar to an individual’s level. Its acquisition depended on one’s potential and innate quality.

Some people could easily pick up skills which they were good at. At the same time, some people were unable to pick up certain skills in their entire lives. It was how the experts in diverse fields came about.

The skills with powerful effects, in particular, enhanced an individual’s potential and quality. To pick one up, one usually had to fulfill demanding conditions and deplete a significant amount of SP. Thus, the difficulty in acquiring such skills was evident.

Fortunately, the SP each individual obtained when leveling up was different. It depended on one’s potential and quality. The higher the potential and inner quality one had, the more SP one would obtain for each level up.

In cases where the potential was less, the SP obtained would naturally be less as well. Hence, one could only obtain more SP than usual via arduous training and battling in terminal battles, with the highest SP being 100.

In other words, no two individuals would secure similar upgrades be it in terms of level or skill just as how it usually was in games. In reality, the upgrades depended on each individual’s potential and quality.

On the other hand, with skills that were difficult to pick up came skills that were easy to acquire. Under normal circumstances, no matter how mediocre an individual was, they could still acquire certain weapon skills by practicing the said weapon for a few years.

Xi En’s “Double Grip Sword”, for instance, could be acquired by someone who had practiced a few years of swordsmanship using a double grip weapon. Someone more talented would probably pick it up within months or even days.

In such a scenario, a less talented individual who reached Level 10 should logically have at least one or two skills.

As for Xi En? He had none!

That was the very reason the guild staff was puzzled.

Xi En was the only one who knew that the reason his level was so low was because he had only been in this world for ten days. As for his skills, it was because the Magic Detector did not manage to sense them.

It was not that he had none. He had a good seventeen skills lined up, with one being an exclusive skill, another a special skill, and the remaining skills at the maximum level.

According to the guild’s staff, the Magic Detector could only detect skills at Level 7 or below. It was impossible that it could detect any of Xi En’s skills given its inability to sense the exclusive and special skills.

As a result, the Magic Detector could not display them. Thus, Xi En ended up with the current situation of having no skill.

It eventually attracted the attention of the Adventurers around them, and their gazes flitted over.

Xi En who now understood his present predicament lapsed into silence. It suddenly dawned upon him how abnormal his situation was.

It was plausible that his level was low. He had just arrived ten days ago. However, it was unbelievable, more so, that he could reach Level 10 in just ten days. If he had not killed so many monsters in the forest, he could not possibly have leveled up so fast.

As for his skills, Xi En’s current situation was obviously abnormal.
