What It’s Like Being a Vampire - Chapter 41

Xiang Kun looked at the time. It was 2 AM.

Xiang Kun did not know if the gigantic owl had a fast recovery ability just like himself and was simply resting before coming for him again. Or maybe, after resting, it would fly off to a faraway place.

If he wanted to look for the owl, it would be the easiest to do so before dawn.

After all, the scent of the owl would not diffuse away yet. Xiang Kun’s bodily functions and his sense of smell would be at their peak before dawn.

Moreover, the owl was afraid of humans and did not dare to move around in the morning. Xiang Kun also did not want anyone to see him going after the owl.

If possible, Xiang Kun wanted to catch the gigantic owl alive.

If it also had the fast recovery ability, he could consume its blood once a while. The owl would then become its long term “source of food”. It was definitely more worth it than purchasing rabbits.

Moreover, he wanted to examine and study the gigantic owl and figure out the reason behind its gigantic size. Was it a new species or had it undergone some transformation just like Xiang Kun himself?

However, these were merely his thoughts. He did not have the ability and equipment to catch the owl. Neither did he have the space to keep it. Moreover, if he found the owl, they would undergo an intense fight.

After making his decision, Xiang Kun did not leave immediately.

That was because he still had to answer a very important question: how was he going to capture the owl even if he found it?

Based on the less-than-twenty seconds of fight with the owl beside the lake earlier on, Xiang Kun could confirm that if they were fighting on the ground, his power would not be weaker than the owl’s. Moreover, he could almost defeat the owl by punching it with his bare hands. Xiang Kun was sure that he had punched the owl until one of its eyes went blind. However, he did not know if the owl could recover by itself or how long it would take to recover.

If he brought a weapon, be it a knife, a hammer, or a screwdriver, he would be much more powerful.

However, the owl could fly…

That meant that the owl would determine if they would engage in a fight.

At the lake earlier on, the owl had attacked Xiang Kun and therefore had been dragged to the ground by him.

What if the owl was determined to flee?

Xiang Kun thought about the possibility of a gun or some sedatives, but he quickly negated those thoughts. Find an arrow? However, where could he find an arrow at this time? Moreover, even if he found one, he could not ensure its accuracy without practice. Without some adjustments, an arrow’s lethalness was limited. Even if Xiang Kun managed to shoot the owl, he might not cause enough damage to it for it to lose its ability to fly.

Moreover, Xiang Kun had just searched up on owls and realized that not only did owls have extremely good night vision, their sense of smell and hearing were very developed too. If the owl was like Xiang Kun, these senses and abilities might have become enhanced after the changes in its body. In that case, Xiang Kun might not be able to secretly spring a sneak attack on the owl.

Therefore, Xiang Kun had an idea, perhaps…

Call the police?

A big owl that was able to kill a full grown husky was a huge threat. Moreover, it was considered an endangered species and needed protection.

Be it the police, zoo officers, or other personnel from different departments, they would definitely come with more professional equipment and personnel to catch the owl.

After catching the gigantic owl, they would send it to a professional organization for study and observation and might find out the reason behind its size.

However, Xiang Kun gave up on that idea very quickly. Firstly, it would be very difficult for him to convince the police or other departments about the existence of a gigantic owl and capture their attention. Secondly, the people whom they send might not follow Xiang Kun’s instructions to catch the owl. After all, he had not told anyone about how his scent-tracking ability was better than a dog’s. Thirdly, even if the owl was caught and was worth protecting and studying, even if Xiang Kun was the first person to find it, he probably would not have the rights to obtain the reports about the studies. Moreover, he would not be able to get the blood from the owl.

Usually, Xiang Kun liked to make preparations and plans before taking action. However, if he had no time to prepare for last-minute events, he would not mind taking action first.

Therefore, he did not think it through further. As the sun was about to rise, he left the house with his Swiss Army knife, flashlight, and a screwdriver.

He did not have time to prepare any weapons. He had the knife that he used to kill rabbits, but the knife would probably not make any difference compared to a screwdriver. Moreover, he might attract unwanted attention and trouble if he left the house with a knife.

At 3:21 AM, Xiang Kun arrived at the lake where he had encountered the owl before.

Xiang Kun realized that none of the owl’s feathers were left behind on the ground.

Usually, he would think that someone passed by and picked up the feathers. Or perhaps the feathers had been blown away by strong wind.

However, when Xiang Kun left, he had taken some feathers with him and put them in his pocket. However, he could no longer find them when he reached home.

Back then, he thought he might have lost the feathers after he jumped into the lake. However, when he realized that all the feathers had disappeared, he recalled the experiments he had done to himself. After cutting off a small piece of flesh from his finger, the flesh turned into dust as his cut healed.

The feathers might have turned into dust and vanished just like the small piece of flesh.

Xiang Kun began to trace the scent of the gigantic owl. Although they had only fought for less than 20 seconds, both parties were badly injured and had lost quite a bit of blood. Therefore, both of their scents were very strong.

Moreover, because it was injured, the owl could not fly at a high speed.

Due to the wind, the direction of the scent might be affected. However, Xiang Kun did not merely depend on the scent to track the owl. He deduced that the owl would not fly to a place with high population density. It would probably flee to a place that was more remote.

After an hour, Xiang Kun took a deep breath as he held a leaf. Then he looked at a mountainous area nearby. Although he could only see the shadows of the trees from this angle, he knew that the owl was hidden inside.

It was in the area when he found the dead rat.

He did not think that there was a temporary cave for the gigantic owl to live in. That was because he had searched the entire mountain thoroughly and had not caught the scent of the owl at all. The dead rat must have been thrown down from the sky.

The owl had only gone to that mountain because it was the nearest remote mountain it could find to recuperate.

Xiang Kun tightened his grip on his screwdriver and walked over.

When Xiang Kun walked out from behind a tree, he looked at the gigantic owl that was standing on a gigantic rock. The owl was also staring at Xiang Kun with its eyes wide.

Clearly, when Xiang Kun confirmed the location of the owl, the owl also sensed Xiang Kun’s presence.

Xiang Kun did not head over rashly. That was because he could see that the owl’s injuries had mostly healed.

Clearly, although it did not heal as quickly as Xiang Kun, its healing ability surpassed that of most animals.

The owl stared at Xiang Kun and adjusted its position as Xiang Kun moved. It faced Xiang Kun and opened its wings slightly so that it could fly off immediately. There were no trees blocking it, so it could fly off immediately.
