What It’s Like Being a Vampire - Chapter 12

It was the 20th of July, the 18th day of June in the Lunar calendar. The Moon was still bright and round.

Moreover, the weather was good—there were hardly any clouds. Under the moonlight, the entire city seemed to be under a filter, giving off a special and unique vibe.

Xiang Kun could feel that his condition outdoors under the Moon was slightly better than when he was indoors.

Of course, this difference was insignificant compared to the difference he felt between the day and night.

He was wondering if the difference was purely due to the better air quality outdoors as there were higher oxygen levels.

However, Xiang Kun still felt something special. When he closed his eyes, he could feel the Moon shining on his body.

It was an indescribable feeling. When he was in the sun, he could feel the Sun shining on his body. That was because the Sun’s heat made his body temperature rise; therefore, he could feel the Sun.

However, the Moon was different. The heat of the moonlight was not as strong. Usually, it was difficult to tell that the moonlight was shining on one’s body if one did not see it.

Xiang Kun was wondering where this energy was coming from. The energy he spent every day should not only have come from the chicken blood and rabbit blood.

Moreover, the difference in his condition between the day and the night should be a critical factor.

Xiang Kun knew that the moonlight also came from sunlight, but it was different from the sunlight.

The surface of the Moon was uneven. Therefore, after the sunlight shone on the moon, not only was it reflected, most of the sunlight and energy were absorbed by the Moon before being emitted by it.

Could his body have different reactions to the moonlight?

Xiang Kun closed his eyes and took deep breaths while relaxing his body. Then he realized that his hearing had improved significantly.

When he was listening to the wind and different noises, he could clearly hear the whispers between the couple at the other corner of the rooftop.

Although he could not hear extremely clearly and could only make out a few sentences here and there, that was enough to surprise Xiang Kun.

He opened his eyes, closed them, and opened them again.

Soon, Xiang Kun realized that his hearing had not improved merely because he had closed his eyes—he had only noticed that his hearing was so good when he closed his eyes.

In fact, if he focused and listened carefully, whether he closed his eyes or not, he could hear the whispers between the couple.

This meant that after the second time he drank blood, his hearing had improved tremendously.

However, before this, he had not noticed this change. The improvement in his eyesight had taken his attention away from the other senses. Usually, he relied more on his eyesight than his hearing.

Xiang Kun naturally thought of training his hearing before his next blood-drinking session to see if there would be more improvements.

However, thinking about the date he had arranged tomorrow, he was afraid of drinking blood too early, so he could only postpone the training.

He did not stay up at the rooftop for too long. He returned to his room and waited for sunrise as he read different articles on his laptop.

At about 5:30 AM, the Sun slowly rose above the horizon. Xiang Kun evidently felt that his condition was worsening and he was not as energetic as before.

At this time, he was coincidentally reading about the tidal force. He wondered if X was related to the tidal force of the Moon and Earth.

Seawater was affected by the tidal force. Human blood was also liquid and could be affected too. Of course, this was insignificant for normal people and could not be felt.

Or rather, after his body was affected by the unknown X, had he become more sensitive to the changes in these forces and magnetic fields?

However, he quickly negated this possibility. The tidal force on Earth did not merely come from the Moon. The Sun had a part to play too. Moreover, the magnitude of the tidal force was not directly related to the changes in the day and night.

As he was frowning and thinking, he looked out the window and saw the Sun rise, shining on the streets. Suddenly, Xiang Kun froze and mumbled, “Could it be that the night brings some additional effect, while the Sun suppresses the effect?”

At about one in the afternoon, Xiang Kun left with a cap and headed to the cafe for the date with the girl.

After he reached the cafe and ordered a drink, Xiang Kun found a corner seat and sat down. Then, as he was on his way to the self-service counter to get some napkins, he poured away the drink in his cup before refilling it with plain water. After that, he returned to his seat.

He looked at the time. It was just past 2 PM, and he had agreed to meet the girl at 3 PM.

He was not anxious. He sat in the corner and read some online resources using his phone.

Usually, before a blind date, he had to prepare some topics to talk about during the date. He would use the information he already knew to figure out the girl’s personality and interests and prepare some possible proposals for what to do next.

However, he was not in the mood to get into a relationship now. He wanted to end this blind date as quickly as possible without offending anyone or causing Chang Bin to feel bad. Therefore, he did not do his homework.

Xiang Kun’s attention was still on the changes to his body.

He had to verify his hypothesis regarding how some factors after the sunrise caused his body functions to be suppressed.

Without any doubt, the sunrise was an obvious change. Therefore, he had to consider sunlight.

However, during sunrise, he had always been indoors and was not shone at by the sunlight. If it was due to temperature rise, it should be a gradual process and would not be at the exact moment.

Xiang Kun guessed that it could be related to the changes in the Earth’s magnetic field when the Sun rose. He could feel the change, and it triggered something similar to a body clock function that suppressed his body functions. Was it decreasing his energy expenditure to achieve some type of balance?

Just as he was thinking about this, he received a WeChat message. The girl had arrived and was asking Xiang Kun what he wanted to drink so she could order for him.

He looked at the time. It was 2:41 PM. The girl was early too.

Xiang Kun looked up and saw a girl enter the shop. Although she was “very pretty and cute”, just as described by Chang Bin, Xiang Kun was not sure that she was the girl.

Because the girl, who was wearing shorts and a white t-shirt, had two pigtails, and was wearing glasses with big, round frames, looked too young. She looked like she was less than 20 years old.
