The Great Trump Card - Chapter 36

Wei Qimian was stunned. Lin Huai went around to the passenger side from outside the car and opened the door. With a loud cry, Wei Qimian leaped into his arms.

Lin Huai hugged her and patted her back sympathetically. He jokingly said, “Hey! I know you are young and beautiful, but that does not mean you can take advantage of my handsomeness. Look, my shirt is now drenched with your tears!”

“You… you are so naughty!” Wei Qimian stayed in Lin Huai’s arms and punched him in the chest. Wu Jun and the rest tactfully did not disturb him. Instead, they went over to apprehend Xuan Yuzhai who was already in a trance.

After Wei Qimian was done crying, she moved from Lin Huai’s arms. Drying her tears, she said in a choked voice, “You are a bad person too. You almost took advantage of Niu Haijiao that time.”

Lin Huai smiled bitterly. “Can you be a little more kinder? I just saved your life and here you are verbally assaulting me.”

“Is that not the truth? I treated you as a friend and that’s how you returned the favor?” Wei Qimian shouted. She wanted to keep these emotions pent up. However, she was too disappointed in Lin Huai. The reason she roared loudly to vent her anger was because she realized that she had suddenly regarded Lin Huai as a very important friend. The more important Lin Huai was, the more unacceptable his actions were to her. As such, she had to wrestle an answer out of him.

Lin Huai quietly waited for Wei Qimian to calm down. He sighed and replied, “Although we are recent acquaintances, I believe you know the person that I am. Do you really believe what you saw was the truth?”

Wei Qimian was momentarily stunned as she recalled the doubts that have been playing in her mind over the past few days. She pushed those aside. Her voice pregnant with suspicion, she asked, “I saw it with my own eyes, so what do you have to say for yourself? Well… I have actually thought of another possibility. However, Niu Haijiao is a good friend of mine. We had been close for almost two months.”

“Close friends for almost two months?” Lin Huai smiled coldly. “Only two months? Do you really think you can figure out her true character within only two months? You considered her a close friend, and yet she betrayed you.”

Wei Qimian’s expression changed. Despite her uncertainty, she shook her head in denial and said, “That is impossible.”

“Alright, since you think so, let’s ask him.” Lin Huai walked toward Xuan Yuzhai where Wu Jun and Wu Mengjie held each of his arms. Xuan Yuzhai was struggling to break free. However, he was weak and scholarly; although he was intelligent, brute strength was not his forte. Therefore, all that struggling was useless.

By then, his mind was clearer and a lot more conscious. Although he still looked out of sorts, at the very least, he was aware of his predicament.

Xuan Yuzhai struggled and shouted, “Lin Huai, are you crazy? What are you doing to me? The both of you! I will have my revenge when we get back to the college. I will personally see that you do not have a day of peace within those college walls!”

Wu Jun and Wu Mengjie’s expression changed. However, they still held Xuan Yuzhai’s arms firmly.

Lin Huai walked over and faced Xuan Yuzhai. “Let him go. He is not getting out of this,” he said confidently.

Wu Jun and Wu Mengjie loosened their grips. Xuan Yuzhai breathed heavily and fell to the ground with a loud thud. He smacked his head and tried to regain full cognitivity.

Lin Huai said with a smile, “Those drugs you used weren’t very strong after all. You regained consciousness so quickly!”

“I…I have no idea what you are talking about.”

Wei Qimian walked over and questioned, “Lin Huai, what do you mean? Are you saying he drugged himself? Why would he do that?”

“You poor innocent child,” Lin Huai said with a bitter smile. “If it wasn’t for me, do you think you would still be in one piece and talking right now? If it wasn’t for me, the drugged coffee would have been consumed by you. The few of us switched the cups at the restaurant. That’s why he ended up consuming the drugged coffee. The Xuan Family has shareholdings at the restaurant you dined in tonight. It was a simple matter of him giving orders to a waitress to spike your drink. Furthermore, he is rich and accustomed to bribing people with money. He must have also bribed Niu Haijiao with a huge sum of money. “

Wei Qimian’s face turned sour. She refused to accept that.

Lin Huai said helplessly, “You were so ready to believe the worst about me. Yet, when it comes to Niu Haijiao taking bribes, you think it’s a lie?”

“Well… it’s not like I haven’t thought about it. I just cannot bring myself to believe it’s the truth.” Wei Qimian sighed. “The only reason why I believe that incident involving you is because I witnessed it with my own eyes.”

Lin Huai replied, “Alright. Then let’s expose his scam and the truth will prevail.”

Xuan Yuzhai frowned. “What truth? I have no idea what you’re talking about. I admit that I was overly excited just now. Mianmian, I am sorry. I couldn’t control my feelings for you and I sincerely apologize for my behavior. However, I did save you tonight. What happened just now was real. Furthermore, we personally witnessed the incident with Niu Haijiao. Don’t listen to his nonsense.”

Lin Huai laughed coldly. “You could not control your feelings? Mister Young Master Xuan, are you trying to tell me that you weren’t drugged? Come on, we’re not stupid. Do you think Mianmian is blind? Everyone could tell that you were definitely off just now, unless you did turn into a monster. As for you saving Mianmian tonight, that was just an orchestrated act. You hired the thugs and even played Young Master Wan like a fiddle. You are such a ruthless person!”

Xuan Yuzhai’s expression changed and he shouted, “I refuse to listen to your nonsense! Even if I was drugged, that had nothing to do with me. You must have spiked my drink. You did it with the purpose of destroying Mianmian’s image of me.”

Wei Qimian’s expression changed. It was true that she did not personally see the perpetrator spike the drinks. Thus, she couldn’t be certain who was telling the truth. Deep in her heart, she wanted to believe Lin Huai, but Niu Haijiao’s incident was still fuzzy. So, how could she believe anyone?

Lin Huai saw the expression on Wei Qimian’s face and instantly understood her thoughts. Once again, he had no choice but to sigh and say, “Mianmian, seeing you like this is really disappointing. Let me expose the truth to you.”

Then, Lin Huai turned around and walked to his car where he retrieved a metal object that looked like an electronic device.

Everyone was confused at the weird object. Lin Huai smiled. “This is a lie detector. It can be used to detect when someone is telling a lie. Young Master Xuan, if you wish to prove your innocence, put your hand on the device. That way, we would know if you are telling the truth.”

Upon seeing Lin Huai with the lie detector, Xuan Yuzhai lost his calm. He backed away and roared, “Are you crazy? You can’t set me up with any random device! How would I know whether that toy is trustable?”

Lin Huai smiled. “As to ascertain if this detector is genuine, we could always use an expert. Furthermore, I believe the Wei Family have such experts on their payroll. In fact, all we need is a handphone and an internet connection.”

Xuan Yuzhai turned around to make a run for it. However, Wu Jun and the rest blocked his path.

Xuan Yuzhai’s face turned green. He said, “How dare you block my way? You are all nothing but a bunch of losers from the computer science major!”

Wu Jun grabbed Xuan Yuzhai’s arm and dragged him back. Along with Wu Mengjie, they pinned him to the ground and held his hand to the lie detector.

Lin Huai asked, “Xuan Yuzhai, tell me. Did you bribe Niu Haijiao and purposely asked her to help set me up?”

“Bullsh*t, bullsh*t!” Xuan Yuzhai screamed. “You are just spouting nonsense! I did not do that!”

The power to the lie detector was on and an alarm blared from the device. It had two lights on the front—blue light to indicate the truth, while the red light meant a lie, with a ‘You’re lying’ written below it. Right now, the red light was glaring. Lin Huai smiled. “See, you are lying.”

Xuan Yuzhai’s face paled and he started sweating profusely.

Lin Huai continued, “I have more questions for you. Did you hire a group of thugs to harass Wei Qimian so you could escape with her? Also, did you spike her coffee because of malicious intent?”

Xuan Yuzhai’s heart thumped and he dared not say a word. By then, everyone could see right through him.

Xuan Yuzhai’s shirt was drenched. He collapsed to the ground and with lifeless eyes, he muttered to himself, “Lin Huai, you demon… I underestimated you. I should have asked Big Lei to get rid of you.”

Lin Huai grinned. “So what? Do you regret your actions?”

“It was a costly mistake.”

Wei Qimian looked at Xuan Yuzhai with disdain. Her eyes were filled with pain. She wasn’t stupid. Everything was obvious to her now. She always suspected something untoward, but chose to believe the worst of Lin Huai than to accept that her close friend had set them up. She was bitterly disappointed with how horrible the situation was.

Xuan Yuzhai eyes were bleak with despair as he said, “So what do you want?”

“Actually, you could be charged with attempted rape…” Lin Huai said.

“I…” Xuan Yuzhai gulped and looked down in despair. He lifted his head and begged, “Let me go this time please. I promise to never provoke you or bring trouble on myself again. I promise to never hold malicious intentions toward Miss Wei from now on.”

Lin Huai smirked. “Alright.”

“Wait… Really?”

“Yes,” Lin Huai said in a serious tone. “However, you must be forthcoming with the truth.”

Lin Huai tapped on the recording app of his phone.

Xuan Yuzhai broke down and said, “No way. I don’t want to go to jail.”

Lin Huai replied, “Only the part about Niu Haijiao.”

“I… alright… alright… I will do it.” Xuan Yuzhai began to spill the beans of how he had managed to buy Niu Haijiao over. “Niu Haijiao had been trying to get close to me since college started. However, I turned her down. Even though she looked decent, I had my eyes on Miss Wei… After all, I could tell that this girl was materialistic and vain. These kinds of girls were simple to deal with. I gave her money and she immediately agreed. As part of the deal, she posed as the victim of bullying and Lin Huai appeared to play the hero. Then, she disheveled her clothes and hugged him. That way, she could frame him…”

“Alright, you may stop now.” Lin Huai turned around and saw that Wei Qimian’s face was green. He sighed. “Mianmian, how do you want to settle this?”
