Wu Shan’s displeasure was palpable.

And yet, there was nothing he could say against it. How could he win against a child, in this situation? Even he couldn’t start a petty squabble like that.

Although it could not be denied that there was something odd about this glamorous trio, the receptionist showed them to their rooms nevertheless.

After they’d had dinner and returned to their own respective rooms, Zhe Huo rummaged through her pack until she found a bamboo scroll, then perched upon a table as she read through it. She had to gain an understanding of this ice demon as soon as possible, its habits and weaknesses, in order to bring it down as early as tomorrow if possible.

As she studied the material, the room seemed to grow brighter. Looking up, she saw that Qinghan had lit a candle and brought it over. He took a seat at the table, and leaned over to see what she was reading. Cupping his chin in one hand, he drawled, “Zhe Huo, when will you be turning in for the night?”

“I’m still only half-finished with this.” She ruffled his wispy brown hair. “Sleepy?”

Qinghan shook his head in reply, took hold of one of her hands, and placed it on the table. Then he laid his head upon the soft palm of her hand, and gazed up at her with his breathtakingly clear eyes.

As Zhe Huo read the scroll with her head slightly lowered, there was something indescribably elegant about the outline of her chin, and all the way down along her neck, bathed in the candlelight like warm honey. The intensity of her gaze upon the scroll… the pronounced point of her nose… her red lips which looked so delicate and sweet… how wonderful it would feel to place a kiss upon them. Such was the nature of Luo Qinghan’s unspoken thoughts.

Eventually, Zhe Huo finished the scroll, yawned, and finally noticed Qinghan fast asleep on her hand. Careful not to make any sudden movements, she set the scroll down gently, and then just stayed still for a while, adoring the scene she was in.

In his waking moments, she would mainly be transfixed by his big, blue eyes. Now those eyes were shut, and his perfectly shaped lashes draped down in a tiny fan. Overcome by a sudden impulse, Zhe Huo reached out with a finger and touched those eyelashes gently. They shook at her touch, brushing past her fingertip, and her heart thrummed in response. However, fearing to wake Qinghan, she hastily withdrew her finger.

It had to be said that Qinghan was the cutest child she’d ever seen. If he was already this good-looking as a child, he would be a devastating force of nature when he grew up. She didn’t dare to even imagine what he’d be like, then.

Fearing he’d catch a cold, she carefully picked him up and carried him over to the bed. Just as she’d pulled the blanket up over him, she heard a light knocking on the door. Opening the door, she found Wu Shan standing outside. He regarded her solemnly, and his eyes swept the room behind her. “Where’s the boy?” he inquired in a flat tone.

She held a finger to her lips. “He’s just fallen asleep.”

Wu Shan cleared his throat softly. “Zhe Huo, come over to my room. I’ve got something for you.”

Zhe Huo had been wanting to speak to him too, so she nodded and gingerly closed the door behind herself, then followed him back to the room next door.

Wu Shan knew that Zhe Huo would be going up Frostsoul Peak the following day, to try her hand at defeating the ice demon. He gave her various pointers on how to handle that nature of foe, and then bequeathed upon her a powerful magical relic. Zhe Huo was moved beyond words. Relics like these were prized by demon hunters above all else.

Suddenly, Wu Shan fixed her with a serious look. “Surely you’re not bringing that little fellow with you up Frostsoul Peak tomorrow?”
