The Body Swap Game - Chapter 6

Picking up his paw, Xia Yu stroked his whiskers.

Cleverness was for how he could use his hands or other parts of his body, showing his dexterity and smarts.

This skill was very useful. It could be used in drawing, piano-playing, and many other activities.

Scaring was also a power for cats since they could make their fur stand on end. The purpose was to make its body look bigger and scare off the enemies.

This skill was also practical. In today’s world, violence was not advisable, but conflict was inevitable. Scaring could be used to solve conflicts without violence.

As for Night Vision, since there were lights at night, it may not be very useful anymore.

This cat was a treasure.

Xia Yu nodded with satisfaction and left the storefront. There were too many people around, who seemed like enormous creatures to him, so staying there didn’t feel safe.

Plus, if he needed to gain experience in Cleverness, this wasn’t the right place.

He heard voices discussing him after he barely took a few steps.

“Mom, that cat is walking on two legs!” A little boy pointed at him excitedly.

Xia Yu, used to walking on his hind legs, put down his front legs.

He reached a more deserted alley to start practicing.

Compared to Scaring, Cleverness was more important. If he guessed correctly, Cleverness could help with piano-playing, helping him acquire the Pig-Head notebook computer faster.

The cat’s Cleverness was shown in hunting and running. With nothing to hunt, he’d just have to run.

Okay, how did he run like a cat?

Humans started with crawling on four limbs, so walking on four legs wasn’t hard, but running on four legs was beyond his experience.

He thought back to how cats ran and tried doing it the same way.

Clang —

He collided with a trash can on the side.

He probably didn’t have the right pose.

He started again. Since he didn’t know how to switch directions, he barely ran two steps before hitting a light pole.

He got up from the ground, dusted himself off, and sat under the light pole. He rubbed his head and started to think.

“Mom, that cat is so stupid!”

“Meow meow meow!”

He meowed at the rude boy, scaring him away. Xia Yu sighed.

This was pretty difficult.

He got up and chose a place with no trash cans nor light poles to practice again.

Three hours later, a dark shadow quickly crossed the alley.

The wind blew on Xia Yu’s fur, cooling him. The sights around him quickly receded from view.

With a fast turn, he avoided a light pole in front of him. Circling the pole three times to show his contempt, Xia Yu ran to a trash can.

Someone without manners tossed a milk tea cup in front of the trash can.

Xia Yu lifted the front of his body and pushed on his hind legs, trying to cross the cup, instead of flying over the cup, however, he fell onto the cup.

“…”

He flipped over and let go of the crushed cup. He lay on his side, propping his chin with a paw, looking depressed.

He knew how to run, but he still didn’t know how to jump.

It was a good thing the person who tossed the cup finished the drink, or the milk would splash on him.

He stared at the cup for a while, then he began to feel hungry.

He needed food.

What should he do?

He was a cat now, a feral cat. How do feral cats look for food?

He looked toward the trash can.

Forget it.

He’ll take a look at the walking street.

He left the alley and reached the walking street. The streetlights were on, making him realize the alley he was in was actually completely dark.

The cat’s Night Vision was a useful skill.

How should he get food?

Go steal a sausage from a convenience store?

As a cat, this kind of behavior wasn’t his style.

Go find a girl and try to scam her?

That would be his own effort, but it was too mortifying.

He walked around the walking street, struggling over what to do.

His gaze landed on a girl who held a biscuit in her hand.

Should he try her?

He hesitated, then, his eyes lit up with an idea.

He ran past the Biscuit Girl to a tree.

There was a little boy who looked at the top of the tree.

The boy’s Pikachu balloon was stuck on a tree branch. Pikachu was an animation character in this world.

The little boy’s mom comforted him.

Xia Yu noticed the boy’s mom was holding a bag with some bread in it. Then, he reached out his claws and gripped the tree.

With claws, climbing trees wasn’t hard. After a short while, Xia Yu reached the top of the tree. He picked up the balloon string with his mouth and slowly crawled down.

When his paws landed on the ground, he relaxed and looked toward the little boy. But the boy and his mom were nowhere to be found.

“???”

Five minutes had passed from when he started climbing the tree and when he got down. It wasn’t surprising the people had left.

With the balloon, Xia Yu didn’t need the little boy.

He looked around and went toward a little girl while holding the balloon in his mouth.

“It’s a cat!” The girl crouched down and tried to stroke Xia Yu, but he ducked.

Xia Yu shook the balloon, trying to get the little girl to notice it.

“Is this for me?” The little girl tried to touch the balloon, but Xia Yu was able to duck again, surprising the girl.

Xia Yu raised his paw and pointed at the shopping bag the girl’s mom held.

The little girl didn’t understand, but her mom did.

The mom took out a sausage and handed it to Xia Yu with some hesitation.

Xia Yu put the balloon in the grown-up’s hand and happily trotted off to the alley with the sausage.

He had just taken a couple of steps before a teenage girl stopped him.

The teenager put her sausage bread in front of Xia Yu. He waited for a beat before giving his sausage to her.

The teenager looked overjoyed with the swap.

A group of people surrounded Xia Yu.

“This cat knows how to trade stuff!”

“How about crepes?”

“I have canned fish.”

What are you doing? Don’t try to touch me!

Twenty minutes later, Xia Yu left the people and carried a roasted duck into the alley.

Opening the package, Xia Yu ate the roasted duck. This was a top-level roasted duck, something Xia Yu hadn’t eaten as a person but as a cat.

The duck tasted delicious. Then, Xia Yu heard the cries of another cat.

He chewed on the duck thigh and looked around. He couldn’t finish the whole duck anyway, he could share some with the other cat.

But he didn’t see another cat.

He listened closely, the sound came from his mind.

It was from the owner of his current body.

The cat was quiet the whole time and finally made a noise after seeing some food.

He finished two duck thighs and hid the rest of the duck in a corner. He started running again.

He passed the entrance to another alley while he ran. As he considered going there, the cat meowed again in his mind.

The cat sounded frightened.

Was it a dangerous place? Then, he won’t go.

He went back to the first alley and paced. It was almost the end of the game. He went toward a bus stop to see if he was still in the same city.

The black cat was a good alias. It was dangerous being homeless though, if they could swap bodies again, he would bring the cat home.

At two a.m., he returned to his own body.

He sat up and opened the skills panel. Now it’s showing Cleverness and Night Vision.

He didn’t even turn on the lights, and the moonlight outside was dim, but he saw everything in the room clearly.

He tried to jackknife from sitting and was able to do it easily.

The Cleverness effect was excellent.

He smiled. Opening the Body Swap panel, he tried to save the black cat in the second space. Only bodies saved in the spaces could be used repeatedly.

The save was successful, so Xia Yu was in an even better mood. He saved the second space as “My Name is Cat.”

He had now used up both spaces. With no blank spaces, he couldn’t swap bodies with anyone else.

He would have had to finish learning from An Siyao and the Black Cat before deleting them to make space. It’d have taken a while.

While he was sighing over the lack of spaces, words appeared in the game.
