Chapter 34: The gathering of Old Classmates

After returning to the capital, Jian Rushi was occupied with nothing. One day she received a call.
“Jian Rushi, I was the class monitor. Do you remember me? We decide to organize a gathering of old college classmates. I hope you can come.”
Due to his friendly attitude, Jian Rushi had no reason to refuse him. Besides, she was a little bored with the idle life these days. So, she readily agreed to go to the gathering.
Mr. Helian had no objection to Jian Rushi going to the gathering, but he made three requests, “No revealing clothes. No high-heeled shoes. No makeup.”
Jian Rushi accepted with good grace. Since she returned to the capital, she had never worn revealing dresses no matter how beautiful they were, because Mr. Helian said that wearing short skirts was an offence against decency.
Jian Rushi thought that Mr. Helian’s taste had changed a lot. He seemed to prefer unpretentious clothes now.
She tied back her hair, and put on a shirt, a pair of jeans and flat shoes. It couldn’t be more unpretentious in her view. If Mr. Helian was still unsatisfied, she would have to put some patches on her clothes.
Helian Ze was very satisfied. However, not everyone had the same aesthetic view as him.
Almost all of her college classmates had already arrived at the hall. Jian Rushi didn’t arrive early or late. Anyway, she was a hot topic of conversation.
At the sight of her unpretentious clothes, her female classmates put on mocking smiles.
With a kind of dark pleasure, someone asked, “Jian Rushi, did you break up with your old-aged boyfriend?”
Jian Rushi, who had always been dressed up at college, now dressed so simply. They all wanted to laugh at her.
A woman took Lin Xue’s hand and said, “Lin Xue must be the most successful person in our class. Her career has blossomed abroad in recent years, and she has even opened a studio. Jian Rushi, you two were roommates before. If you can’t find a job, you can go to Lin Xue’s studio to gain some working experience.”
Someone echoed, “Yes! We are all old classmates. Of course we should help each other.”
Lin Xue refused politely, “My small studio has just opened for business, and is not strong. All my employees have to work very hard.”
Everyone knew that Jian Rushi was terrible at school, because as a rich man’s mistress, she had never studied hard. So it was impossible for her to work hard in Lin Xue’s studio.
Jian Rushi laughed and said in disapproval, “I’m an academic loser. How can I go to Lin Xue’s studio? I don’t want to bring troubles upon her.”
There was enmity between Lin Xue and Jian Rushi, though no one knew it. Lin Xue had been always envious of Jian Rushi’s opulent lifestyle at college. Afterwards, she saw Helian Ze who doted on Jian Rushi, and became more envious of Jian Rushi. Now Jian Rushi’s modest dressing gave Lin Xue an illusion that Helian Ze had broken up with Jian Rushi. Lin Xue couldn’t help but feel delighted.
In her view, Helian Ze was a rich, handsome and perfect man, and Jian Rushi didn’t deserve him at all.
“Jian Rushi, I seem to have seen you in the TV series.” A man, who had sharp eyes, recognized at once that Jian Rushi had appeared in some TV plays.
“Hahaha, she played the roles of passersby?”
Everyone was yearning for the glamorous showbiz. So they couldn’t help but ask some questions. But they all had a deeply rooted prejudice against Jian Rushi, so their words were loaded with irony.
“Do you get a good pay as a walk-on?”
“I have heard that there are various hidden rules in showbiz. Is it true?”
“As a beautiful woman, you must have often been bullied by the rich, right?”
Jian Rushi, who was always indulged by Helian Ze these days, got angry. She picked up a bowl and banged it down on the ground. All the people in the hall quieted down.
