Tong Yi swallowed and nodded. “Mm.”

“You want to get engaged to me?” he asked again.

Tong Yi felt that Lu Zhanbei’s gaze was like a whirlpool, deep and dangerous. She braced herself and nodded again. “Mm.”

Lu Zhanbei’s lips curved up seductively. He placed one hand on the car window and closed the distance between them. He lowered his head and slowly approached Tong Yi.

The man’s warm breath was on her face, coupled with his unique masculine scent lingered in her nose. Tong Yi’s hands which hung by her side tightened as Lu Zhanbei came closer.

What was he trying to do?

Calm down, don’t panic.

What could he do in broad daylight, by the road outside the police station?

He was just trying to scare her.

She could not back down now.

That was what she thought in her heart, but as his well-defined handsome face gradually filled her vision, Tong Yi could not remain calm any longer.

Her heart was pounding like a deer on the run, she found it almost impossible to breathe.

When the tip of the man’s nose touched hers, her skin felt like it was on fire.

Tong Yi looked away in a panic.

Lu Zhanbei stared at the woman’s trembling eyes for a moment. He retracted his hand, turned around, and leaned against the car door. He took out a cigarette box from his pocket, lit a stick, and puffed away.

Tong Yi gulped. Her throat was dry and tight. After a long while, her chaotic heartbeat gradually calmed down. Her gaze shifted slightly, and she took in the view of the guy next to her. He had one hand in his pocket, his tall body casually leaned against the car door as he smoked.

The man had a smooth side profile. His slightly protruding Adam’s apple was sexy and seductive.

He looked like someone who had been smoking for years, unfathomable danger laced his every movement.

“Aren’t you going to say something?” His thin lips turned toward her.

Tong Yi quickly retracted her gaze, pretending to be calm as she said stubbornly, “I’m just not ready yet.”

“Ha!”

She heard the man chuckle.

She turned around, only to see him smoking with a calm expression. It was as if that chuckle was just a figment of her imagination.

Sensing her gaze, he turned to look at her.

The moment their eyes met, Tong Yi feigned calmness and looked away.

Lu Zhanbei looked at the woman who was half a head shorter than him through the smoke. There were layers of unfathomable emotions in his eyes but they were undulating and disappeared in a flash, leaving not a trace. “Then come and find me when you’re ready.”

Upon hearing this, Tong Yi looked up. By then, he had turned his lengthy back toward her. He was already walking away.

He left in a black car that had stopped not far away.

In the car, the driver respectfully asked the man in the back seat, “Master Bei, where are we going?”

Lu Zhanbei leaned his broad body against the seat of the chair. He tilted his head and looked at the pretty figure through the black car window. “Hotel.”

The driver didn’t catch Lu Zhanbei’s meaning. He asked again, trembling as he did so, “Master Bei, which hotel?”

Lu Zhanbei retracted his gaze and closed his eyes. “The hotel where the Lu family is hosting their engagement banquet.”

“Yes, sir.” The driver immediately started the car and sped off toward their destination.

“What are you still looking at? The car is long gone.” Ling Rui rolled down the car window and leaned forward to shout at the woman who was still stunned in place outside the passenger seat.

Tong Yi retracted her gaze and turned around to open the car door.

Ling Rui handed Tong Yi the phone that had already been switched to silent mode. “Look, my phone is about to explode from all these incoming calls from your parents and your…”

He was about to say ‘fiancé’, but when he thought about the scene that he had just witnessed from his ‘hidden’ spot in the car, he swallowed the rest of his words. “Lu Moxi and the rest have been calling me non-stop.”

Tong Yi glanced at Ling Rui’s phone but didn’t pick it up. She reached out to buckle her seatbelt. Her mind was still filled with the words that Lu Zhanbei had said before he left.

‘Then come find me when you’re ready.’
