The next day, sunlight filtered into the ward. The thin curtains fluttered with the breeze, and a trace of coolness brushed against Shannon’s pale face.

She slowly opened her eyes, and was met with a sea of white. An unpleasant smell assailed her senses.

The pain stemming from the lower part of her body suddenly gave Shannon a bad feeling. She subconsciously touched her lower abdomen. Feeling the flatness there, tears streamed down her cheeks.

She wasn’t fated to meet this child. In the end, she still lost everything…

“Shannon, you’re awake? How do you feel?” A gentle voice suddenly sounded beside her. Shannon slowly turned her head. She was still in a daze, and the voice felt distant.

It was… Matthew?

“Matthew, I…”

“Don’t move. The doctor said that although you lost the baby, if you take good care of yourself, you can still get pregnant again in the future. Don’t be too upset.” Shannon struggled to get up, but Matthew quickly held her down gently and tucked her back in under the sheets.

Even with his comforting words, Shannon’s tears still fell uncontrollably like rain.

She allowed her tears to flow freely.

“Shannon, don’t cry anymore. Since you couldn’t keep the baby, it meant that the both of you aren’t fated to meet in this lifetime. Mrs. Weiss said that you should rest more. If you cry your eyes out, your baby won’t feel happy in heaven too.” Matthew stood up and poured a glass of water for Shannon.

She lifted her teary eyes to look at the gentle man in front of her. He didn’t know how important this baby was to her.

She loved Max. This baby was the only evidence of their love.

Now, she had nothing left. Everything was like a dream. She didn’t even have a single beautiful memory left.

“The baby will blame me for this, right? As his mother, I didn’t protect him well, and he could only be in my belly for a few months.” Her delicate face was full of worry, and her weak voice was full of despair.

Matthew’s heart ached when he saw her in such a state. However, he didn’t know how to comfort her since he had never had a girlfriend before.

“Shannon, this baby will definitely be happy to know that he has such a beautiful and kind mother missing him. It’s almost noon. Would you like something to eat?” Matthew changed the topic, hoping to draw Shannon out of her depression.

Shannon was immersed in her sorrow. She touched the small pendant around her neck. It was something her mother left her, telling her to give it to her child in the future.

However, she was so useless. Her baby was gone before he could even see this exquisite necklace…

“I don’t feel like eating.” Shannon was getting increasingly upset, and had no appetite at all.

“Shannon, I haven’t eaten anything since last night. Just accompany me to eat something, alright?” Matthew knew that she had always been kind and wouldn’t let him starve.

It was only then that Shannon snapped out of her thoughts. She suddenly felt a little guilty.

She hadn’t contacted Matthew for such a long time, but the moment she contacted him, it was to seek his help, and she hadn’t even thanked him.

“Matthew, I’m so sorry. I was too upset. Can I trouble you to get us some food, and we’ll eat together?” Shannon wiped her tears and tried her best to smile.

Hearing this, Matthew grinned. “Alright.”

He turned around and left, leaving Shannon alone in the ward.

She looked out of the window feeling depressed. The sun outside was shining brightly, but the chance to see her baby would never come again.

In the end, she had given her heart to the wrong man, causing this mess.

How was she going to continue living? She had nothing. Nothing at all…

At the thought of this, Shannon’s tears started flowing uncontrollably again. She caressed her flat stomach, getting increasingly emotional.

Initially, she thought that even if she had lost Max, she would at least have her baby with her, and she would still be able to live a good life.

But now, not only did she fail to protect her baby, her body was in tatters.

“Shannon, I’ve asked someone to send some nourishing food over. It’ll be here soon. The doctor said that you can be discharged after a few more days of observation. Don’t worry.” Matthew had rushed back, with a gentle expression on his face.

Ironically, Matthew’s gentle expression reminded Shannon of Max’s frigid expression the day before. What she once thought was love, was simply a joke.

She had always thought that he treated her well, and that they would spend the rest of their lives together.

But if she thought about it carefully, even when they were in bed, he would never smile at her.

It turned out that it was all her wishful thinking. She couldn’t even be considered a substitute…

“Matthew, thank you. If it weren’t for you, I’m afraid I would have died in that shabby place.” Shannon’s pretty face was filled with helplessness as she smiled bitterly.

Matthew’s heart ached as he observed her expression. She was such a beautiful person, yet she had to encounter such a painful experience.

“You’ve thanked me countless times. However, I do want to ask you. Who did this to you? I didn’t even know that you were married.” Matthew’s eyes were probing, unable to hide his curiosity.

Shannon felt a sharp pain in her heart when she heard Matthew’s question. That’s right. She didn’t tell anyone that she was married, because she had married in secret.

“Sir, the food you ordered has arrived.” The sound of food delivery outside saved Shannon from answering his question.

Matthew immediately got up to bring the food to the ward. He propped the table up, and placed the food in front of Shannon.

“Here, have some soup to warm yourself up.” Matthew scooped a bowl of soup for Shannon and handed it to her.

His thoughtfulness made Shannon burst into tears and two large teardrops fell into the soup bowl.

She picked up the bowl and gently drank the soup. It was clearly delicious, but she couldn’t taste anything.

Matthew lowered his head and ate his food without asking any more questions. He finally realized that she was completely heartbroken, and he couldn’t bear to ask her anymore.

The two of them ate in silence in the ward, and Matthew took care of Shannon meticulously.

In a mansion in the suburbs…

When Janice heard that Shannon had a miscarriage, a faint trace of a smile appeared in her beautiful eyes.

“Hannah, you’re really my best friend. It’s all thanks to you this time. The consequences would be terrible if she had given birth to the baby.” Janice raised her wine glass and thanked her friend.

Hannah’s hands trembled as she took the wine glass. She was really doing this for Janice, but when she heard about the miscarriage, her heart unwittingly tightened.

After all, this was a crime, a life had been taken away.

“Janice, you should quickly tell President Wenley about this. It seems to me that he doesn’t want the baby too, so you should tell him this piece of good news quickly.” Hannah put down her wine glass. All she wanted to do was to leave this place quickly.

Janice could tell that Hannah’s emotions were unstable. She stood up, gave Hannah a gift she prepared, then sent her home.

After Hannah left her house, her words suddenly surfaced in Janice’s mind. Perhaps, she should really tell Max about this.

She drove to Max’s company, but he wasn’t there..
