Spending A Fortune For My Wife’s Substitute - Chapter 28

A dark glint flashed across Max’s eyes. He knew that Janice must be feeling extremely uneasy, but she forced herself to appear calm and earnest.

Little did she know that the more she acted like this, the more disgusted he felt!

If she really cared about him, she wouldn’t have left back then.

“The banquet is over. I’ll send you back.” Max picked up his blazer and walked out of the room.

His cold expression made Janice’s eyes darken. He didn’t even give her an explanation.

The journey was silent. As usual, he sent her home and left.

The number of times that Max stayed in this villa could be counted solely using one’s fingers.

The more Janice thought about it, the more unsettled she became. She had to think of a way to make Shannon disappear.

At the hotel, Shannon was still looking for Pete. The uneasiness in her heart grew stronger.

“Miss Zanders, Mr. Pete has already returned home. President Wenley has asked me to send you back.” Just as Shannon was about to contact Max, Jake suddenly appeared beside her.

She finally felt relieved, but she instinctively rejected Max’s arrangement.

“There’s no need. Tell him that we have nothing to do with each other anymore. I hate it when there’s no clean break between people.” Shannon walked out quickly and hailed a taxi.

Max watched her leave the hotel in the taxi, while Jake recounted what Shannon said.

After hearing this, Max’s eyes were filled with coldness. She actually dared to reject him.

“President should we…”

“Don’t make any decisions for me. Return to Azure Harbor.” Max interrupted Jake coldly and returned to his own home.

When Shannon returned home, the first thing she did was to check on Pete. After making sure that he was unharmed, she returned to her apartment with peace of mind.

Sitting in the dark room, she contemplated whether she should ask Pete to leave. If he continued to stay here, he might be implicated.

But was she supposed to face everything alone? Did she have that much courage?

Shannon recalled Max’s expression in the hotel room, and the words that he had said.

With a smirk, she got ready for bed. After having a shower she took her sleeping pills.

Just like every other night, she was still haunted by those messy dreams.

The next morning, Shannon woke up feeling extremely tired. She tidied up her appearance and went to the law firm.

“Good morning, President Zanders.” Shannon had just walked into the office, when she found Gina smiling at her with a devious look in her eyes.

Instinctively, she felt that something was different. And when she opened the door to her office, she was met with a vast bouquet of fiery red roses.

The roses were dazzling and there were even water droplets on the petals.

“Good morning. I hope that you’ll be happy everyday.” Matthew had signed off on the card.

She walked inside, and there was a box on her desk.

The breakfast was obviously prepared by him, and he even made sunny side-ups for her.

Shannon’s heart warmed when she saw everything that Matthew had done for her. However, she knew that this warm feeling wasn’t love. She couldn’t give him the love that he wanted.

Putting away the meal box, she carried the huge bouquet and walked out of her office, then she expressionlessly said to Gina, “You can have these flowers.”

After that, Shannon immersed herself in her work. This was the only way she could calm herself down.

“Invite Miss Nichols over please.” Shannon instructed Gina over the intercom.

After a while, an extremely artistic young woman came into the law firm. Shannon knew at a glance that this woman was part of the literary world.

“With regards to the person you want to sue, as well as the defamation case, I would suggest a settlement outside of court.” Shannon provided her professional opinion.

The two of them spent the entire morning discussing in the conference room, and they invited the defendant to the firm in the afternoon. It was already eight o’clock at night when both parties reached a compromise.

Exhausted, Shannon picked up her bag and left the office. Ever since she saw Max at the banquet last night, her heart had been in turmoil.

It was only when she was working that she could temporarily forget about him. However, once she was free, she would fall back into those memories once more.

She roamed the city alone; the shops that were in her memories had already changed. The more Shannon thought about it, the more emotional she became, and she felt as though she couldn’t breathe.

She went into a bar, had the bartender open a bottle of hard liquor, and downed one glass after another.

Her phone vibrated continuously in her bag. When she saw Matthew’s name flashing on the screen, she immediately rejected the calls.

Since she couldn’t give him any sort of promise, she didn’t want to have any ties to him anymore.

“Get me another bottle of whiskey.” Shannon shook the empty glass, then pushed it to the waiter.

When the waiter saw her dazed expression and noticed that she was drinking alone, he didn’t dare to open another bottle for her.

“Miss, you can’t drink anymore. You’ll get too drunk if you continue drinking.” He reminded her kindly.

Shannon stood up abruptly and glared at the man with her drunken eyes. However, it was precisely because she was drunk that her glare didn’t hold much deterrence.

The waiter prepared a cocktail with very low alcohol content. Shannon drank it all in one gulp and leaned on the bar’s counter with her phone in her hand, then slowly drifted off to sleep.

“Hello, this is the Cloud Bar. This lady is drunk. Are you her friend? Please come and pick her up.” The waiter gently removed Shannon’s phone from her hand and answered Matthew’s call.

When Matthew heard this, he immediately drove over to the bar. By then, Shannon was already half conscious.

“You’re here.” Shannon stood up shakily, a smile appearing on her pink lips.

Shannon was a little dazed by the face that held a resemblance to Max’s.

She felt like she was in a dream where Max had always been by her side, and had never left her.

Everything was still the same as before, and he was still the husband she loved.

Shannon moved closer to Matthew and wrapped her arms around him. She mumbled, “Is that you?”

Matthew didn’t know who she was talking about. He only knew that she shouldn’t stay here any longer.

He carried her outside, then sped over to Shannon’s home.

Along the way, Shannon leaned against the passenger seat and kept mumbling, “Why? Why did you ditch me?”

Matthew’s grip on the steering wheel tightened. He knew that she had been hurt before, but he didn’t expect her to be hurt so deeply.

Half an hour later, Matthew arrived at Shannon’s neighborhood. He carried her home and gently placed her on the bed.

“Why did you come to my house?” Shannon suddenly assumed that Matthew was Max.

Matthew stood there in a daze. Did she take him for someone else?

“Go away, Max Wenley! I hate you! Why did you dump me? Why did you even want to get rid of our baby?” Shannon struggled to get up, tears flowing from her drunken eyes.

Matthew froze when he heard Max’s name. Her previous boyfriend was Max?

“Shannon, who am I?” Matthew was shocked.

Shannon frowned when she heard Matthew’s voice. Her mind was in a mess.

However, under the influence of alcohol, she was unable to tell who Matthew was. She thought that Max had really entered her house.

“Shannon, Max…”
