Reset of The Apocalypse - Chapter 46
“Wait for me!”
Ye Fei’s voice echoed from behind Lin Chao who was about to pick up their speed and depart. She ran out, bending down to carry Lin Shiyu before telling Lin Chao, “Let’s go together. I know of a nearby house that’s still empty. We can stay there tonight and find another way out when the sun rises.”
Fan Xiangyu looked at her in surprise and asked with piqued interest, “Aren’t you scared of being eaten by the monsters? Isn’t it better to just hide here?”
The nightfall was dark, Ye Fei could not see Fan Xiangyu’s expression as she shook her head in reply, “They’ve gone over the line. Even if I die, I won’t stay with them.”
“Tsk, tsk. There really are people who are fearless of death huh. I hope you still think the same when you’re pounced by those monsters,” Fan Xiangyu said with a grin.
Ye Fei looked at her in bewilderment. “Aren’t you afraid?” She could not understand why the girl still felt gleeful when she was forced out of the safe house with the possibility of being eaten later.
‘Afraid?’ Fan Xiangyu was tickled. “I’m quite afraid now that you mention it.”
Lin Chao glared at her. “No one thinks that you’re mute even if you don’t speak. Let’s go. Faster.”
Fan Xiangyu with her tongue stuck out, quickly covered her mouth with beaming eyes.
Looking at the middle-aged woman who was still begging on the floor, Ye Fei quickly told her, “Pick yourself up. They won’t let you go in. Even if you do, they’ll ask you to sacrifice your body in exchange. Let’s leave this place together…”
The woman flung her hand away and looked at her with dagger-like eyes; her tears and snot-filled face twisted in the night as she spoke with anguish, “Go away, it’s all your fault! If you didn’t bring the three of them back, we’d have still been okay!”
Ye Fei was taken aback, not expecting this woman’s ulterior beliefs to reveal.
Fan Xiangyu shook her head with a tut and gloated. “Sis officer, you don’t have your gun anymore. Do you think these people will still listen to you? If you had a pistol with you, she’ll come crawling back at once; but without a gun, you’re just a mere woman. In her eyes, you’re no more different from her. You’re both in the vulnerable group!”
Stunned, Ye Fei recalled the past events and seemed to have been struck with realization.
The middle-aged woman was already wailing and shouting to the group inside, “Let me in. I can sleep with you too. If you think I’m not worthy, at least let me daughter in. She’s still so young, she can’t die just like this…”
Ye Fei was once again in disbelief. “Are you crazy? Don’t you have a husband? How can you sleep with others? You – you!” She was speechless from anger, the education and values she was taught since young forbid her from imagining that there were such shameless people like this.
Lin Chao impatiently took Lin Shiyu from Ye Fei, whilst she was still engaged with the group. The zombies were almost here, taking large strides into the nightfall.
Shrugging, Fan Xiangyu held her fair arms behind her and followed suit skipping like a dark joyous butterfly.
Ye Fei looked at the trio then towards the mother and daughter pair before gritting her teeth and chased after Lin Chao and girls.
Before she made it far, a growl came from the left corner of the street. It was a familiar hoarse snarl, the sound of those monsters with festering throats.
She was alarmed as she did not expect the monsters to have come. Moreover, the dark night inhibited her to see how far the monsters were. She could only shout at Lin Chao and the girls, “Come back quickly, let us hide first. We’ll leave tomorrow!”
Without turning back, Lin Chao kept his pace wide away.
Seeing the trio about to disappear from her sight, Ye Fei felt caught in between but had still run after them whilst clenching her teeth.
Hearing the roar of zombies, the middle-aged man Huang and the handsome young man outside the door were horrified. They did not expect the young man just now was speaking the truth. A monster had actually come. Frightened, they pushed the mother and daughter away instantly and pulled the door down after scurrying into the house.
As the door was halfway closed, the mother and daughter pair jumped, dragging the door desperately in an attempt to come inside.
The middle-aged man Huang kicked her face frantically, fracturing her nose bridge, and cussed, “Get out of the way, you damned thing!”
He rapidly pulled the door closed upon kicking the pair away and locked it, scrambling back to the basement.
The woman slammed the door only to realize it was locked. The monster’s growl was already fast approaching. Hopelessness shot from her gaze, she then decided promptly; speaking to her daughter ignoring the blood that oozed from her nose. “Quick, follow that police. I’ll delay the monsters here!”
“No, mommy…” The girl sobbed.
“Listen to me, go! Don’t let me die in vain!” The woman spoke harshly. Based on the monster’s speed, she knew they would both meet their tragic demise had they run away together. One must stay as a bait.
Roar!
The monster was increasingly close, only a dozen meters away.
Misty-eyed, the girl turned and ran, chasing after Ye Fei and vanishing in the nightfall.
Regret filled the woman’s eyes as she watched her child. If she had believed what Lin Chao and left with them, both still could have survived. Nevertheless, it was too late for regret now.
She smiled in sorrow. “Xiao Yu, mommy can’t keep you company anymore…”
Rubbing the blood on her face onto the door, she banged her head against it without restraint, spitefully shouting, “I won’t let all of you go even if I die!”
The first zombie to arrive was immediately lured by the scent of blood, charging in excitedly.
Looking at the rotten face that jumped at her from the dark, the middle-aged woman’s heart almost stopped beating just from the terror. Fear instinctively pushed her to struggle but the zombie was too powerful. Her throat was directly bitten off as she shrieked in agony and writhed involuntarily.
.
Lin Chao and girls who were now two hundred meters away heard the agonized cries from behind.
Ye Fei shook in fright. She could perceive that it was the middle-aged woman’s voice…
At this bitter moment, soft footsteps sounded in the night behind her. A sobbing voice called out, “Sis officer, sis officer, wait for me…”
Ye Fei knew that it was the little girl at once. She stopped and turned back seeing her outline grow clearer despite the dark. It was the woman’s daughter.
She had obviously heard her mother’s cries as well, tears of anguish flowing like an unclosed tap.
“Quick, come over to me,” Ye Fei hurriedly said.
The girl nodded in her sobs but just as she ran, a black shadow flashed.
Plop!
A zombie came darting from the dark, just as it was about to attack the little girl, it fell backward stiffly.
In the darkness, only Lin Shiyu and Fan Xiangyu’s vision could allow them to catch the silvery glow that just gleamed. A flying knife was stabbed and pierced through the zombie’s skull!
The silver glow stopped between Lin Chao’s fingers as he continued trekking without turning back.
Ye Fei had retrieved the girl. Although she did not what happened to the zombie, she picked up the girl and ran once she saw the opportunity, dashing after Lin Chao.
