Reset of The Apocalypse - Chapter 43
Broken down cars cluttered the forsaken streets in disarray. Human corpses could be seen everywhere, most of them chewed down to remaining skeletons.
Rotten zombies strolled aimlessly.
Out of nowhere – Swoosh! Swoosh! Swoosh!
A few shadows sprinted from the far end of the road. The first one was a young man in black sports attire with a distant look; he was dashing yet did not look to be the least bit panting.
Two girls followed him. One looked seven or eight years old; supple-skinned and innocent, she was wearing a pair of black plastic glasses without lenses that she prodded occasionally. Another girl was sixteen or seventeen and was dressed unusually extravagant. She donned an European-styled black dress and a black veil that covered the upper half of her face, exposing only her perfectly delicate fair chin; the full black skirt covered her legs but when chiffon wind blew revealed her snow-white ankles, it was a beauty to behold.
Seven to eight zombies tailed the three people. From afar, it seemed the three of them were being chased by these zombies.
Lin Chao glimpsed at the sky. Dusk had already fallen, the rancid stench in the air seemed to turn thicker. He said with a low voice, “Let’s find a spot and rest. We’ll continue tomorrow.”
“Mm.” Lin Shiyu heeded what he said without objection.
Fan Xiangyu asked curiously, “It should be okay going during nightfall since you’re so skilled, shouldn’t it?”
“There isn’t much in this city that could threaten me but there is a lot that could kill you,” answered Lin Chao.
Fan Xiangyu pouted. ‘If you hadn’t disallowed me from evolving, I would’ve conquered this place long ago. Hmph!’
Simply picking a random office building as their temporary shelter, Lin Chao was about to head over when he heard soft breathing that came from the back of said location.
‘Survivors?’ He frowned slightly.
The soft breathing moved toward them. Then, a woman’s face showed up at the alley behind the office tower and waved at Lin Chao and the group, shouting with a suppressed voice, “Come over quickly! Over here!”
Lin Chao and the girls were puzzled.
Lin Shiyu clapped her hands suddenly and explained her comprehension of the situation, “I know. She must have thought that the zombies Lil Xiangxiang is controlling are chasing after us and wants to save us.”
“Save people? There are still stupid humans like this?” Fan Xiangyu exclaimed in surprise.
Lin Chao stopped and glanced at the woman but did not go over directly. He did not want to have too much interaction with survivors like this.
Hiding at the alley, Ye Fei saw that the three people had stupidly stopped as zombies behind them were about to catch up. Panicking, there was no time for consideration as she charged out of the alley and ran to the group, frantically speaking, “Come with me quickly. I have a safe place. They’re about to reach us, quickly!”
She spoke very fast and while she did, she squatted down to carry the little girl among the trio before turning to run toward the alley.
“Uh…” Fan Xiangyu was stunned. She did not expect someone so brave to carry the devil’s elder sister away right in front of him. She turned to Lin Chao. “What should we do? She carried your sister away.”
Lin Chao glared at her in feigned annoyance. “Control your monsters, get them farther. We’re following her.”
Fan Xiangyu gave an “Oh” and ordered the zombies to stay on the spot before she went after Lin Chao.
After Ye Fei carried Lin Shiyu into the alley, she was relieved when she turned to see that Lin Chao and Fan Xiangyu had caught up and come with her. “Faster, these monsters are very fast!”
A chuckle escaped Fan Xiangyu as she felt that the woman was foolish to the point of being adorable. “If the three of them were ordinary survivors with ordinary speed, the zombies would have killed them long ago; how could they have pursued them for so long?”
Lin Chao gave off a warning glare to her.
At the receiving end of his ice-cold gaze, Fan Xiangyu managed to swallow her laugh but still wore a smile. She covered her mouth with her fair hand, although her shoulders were still shaking uncontrollably.
Lin Chao could not help rolling his eyes before looking to Lin Shiyu who was on the woman’s shoulder, signaling not to expose her ability.
Nodding her head, Lin Shiyu lowered her head and toyed with the woman’s hair.
Ye Fei was huffing and puffing from running. When she was near the safe house, she turned back to check. Breathing out in relief to see the monsters were gone, she put the girl on her shoulder down; panting and exhausted but comforted that she had rescued another three lives.
Looking at the girl’s innocent face, she felt sympathetic and said stroking her hair, “Don’t be scared. Big sis is here.”
‘Ha – pff!’
Fan Xiangyu did not manage to hold herself back and nearly snorted her snot out. When Ye Fei looked up at her, she quickly covered her mouth but she really could not withstand the amusement, shaking her shoulder nonstop.
Lin Chao was a little speechless. ‘Is it so funny? Will you die if you don’t laugh?’
“How are you?” Ye Fei seemed to have thought of something looking at Fan Xiangyu and sighed promptly, “Don’t be sad. At least we’re still alive. We’ll have hope as long as we live!”
Fan Xiangyu turned away with her shoulders only quaking harder.
Seeing that the woman was going to continue on, Lin Chao quickly intervened lest her words choked the lady zombie whose sense of humor could easily be tickled to death. “It’s not early now. Do you have a place to stay?”
Ye Fei took a glance at him. Recalling that the young man was taking care of a small and also a young girl who did not possess any combat prowess in the face of the zombies’ pursuit; her gaze towards him was respectful. “I do, come with me.”
Lin Chao and the girls followed her to a garage-like basement and to Lin Chao’s surprise, there were seven to eight survivors here. All of them were listless with tattered clothing and were sitting around a fire-pit for warmth.
December has passed now. It was early January and the weather was cold. An Evolved like Lin Chao was naturally unaffected by the cold, accustomed to wearing thin clothes, but these were mere normal survivors. They were draped in thick cotton-padded jackets curled up like worms.
As Lin Chao and the girls arrived, the survivors looked up. Lin Chao clearly caught the shift of shock, disappointment, and even a hint of hidden rage from the initial anticipation in their eyes when they saw them.
“Officer Ye, you – you’re back.” A middle-aged man who was slightly cleaner and neater in appearance stood up, greeting Ye Fei with a forced smile.
Officer? Lin Chao’s gaze involuntarily darted to the woman’s waist and saw a pistol.
Greeted by the man, Ye Fei then suddenly turned to the trio as if remembered something. “I’m a police officer. My name’s Ye Fei. Don’t worry, there are no zombies around this area. It’s very safe. I go out to patrol every day.”
