Multiverse’s End - Chapter 2

Luo Su was a person with a system, and he was also a ‘veteran’ who had traveled to two worlds. But he knew nothing about this system of his, not its name, application, or purpose. He didn’t even know why the system had chosen him.

After brushing his teeth, washing his face, and going to bed one day, he woke up to a cold mechanical voice in his mind.

His computer had not lost power; his phone had not exploded. There were no meteors from the heavens, and no old beggars, a lucky find at a secondhand market, or anything else like that. He had just suddenly been called the winner by the system.

Luo Su had once told the system that he was very against the idea of an unknown object in his mind, but the system had not given him any explanation. It had only told him that he was in the internship phase. Only when he had passed the tests of three Mission Worlds would he become a true user, upon which he would naturally learn everything.

Luo Su found this rather unbearable. The time between the system issuing Mission World was not at all on a fixed schedule. The time between the first two Mission Worlds, ‘Subway Surfer,’ and ‘Temple Run’ was half a month, but this time, not even two weeks had passed. There were no rules to speak of.

Luo Su hated this feeling of being controlled like he was a puppet on strings, but until he became a true user, he could only endure it.

He had already finished two Mission Worlds, and once he finished the third, the truth would become clear.

Luo Su took in a deep breath of cigarette smoke and then opened the system screen. A panel with individual traits appeared in front of him, all of it about himself.

[User: Luo Su]

[Strength: 10 (7+3)]

[Constitution: 8 (6+2)]

[Wisdom: 9 (8+1)]

[Level: 2]

[Experience: 150/500]

[Wealth: 400]

The remaining attributes were grayed out. The system had explained that the information below would only be unlocked once he became a true user. Besides that, the illustrious shop function of the system was also grayed out. Until this privilege was unlocked, Luo Su’s wealth was essentially meaningless.

With regards to the three basic traits—Strength, Constitution, and Wisdom—they seemed simple, but they represented very broad categories.

The first was Strength. It wasn’t just arm strength or how much one could bench press. It was traits like strength, speed, and dexterity all mixed together.

The second was the Constitution. The physical constitution, the five senses, poison resistance, adaptability, health points, and physical resistance were all under this trait. Putting points in it could even increase one’s lifespan.

The last was Wisdom. It was similar to the intelligence stat found in games, not just simple IQ. It could also be regarded as mental strength, and it included coordination, the sixth sense, magic points, and magic resistance.

These three attributes complemented one another, and going without even one was no good. There was no possibility of becoming a god by just focusing on a single stat. For example, if one madly poured points into Strength and became a giant green man, without the support of the Constitution or the coordination of Wisdom, one would simply create a deformed and brittle object. Simply waving one’s fist could break one’s body.

Luo Su had used the six points he had received and evenly distributed them among the three basic stats. In his current condition, he would only need a little training to become one of the best athletes in the nation…track-and-field.

As for where the stat points had come from, there was no need to explain that. Just like in a game, each level-up gave him three stat points. As Luo Su had been a police officer before, even before receiving the system, he had gone through physical training that made his Strength and Constitution 5 points higher than the base person.

As for the three additional points in Wisdom, that was not something that could be simply trained but was connected to his freakish sixth sense. He had an innate talent that allowed him to recognize which people were more liable to be attacked, which people were simpler, which people lacked in social experience, and which people were just a little too humble.

His police instructor had determined that he would either be a police officer or a criminal and, if a criminal, a serial offender!

As he scanned his basic stats, Luo Su focused on his level. There was one question that left him incredibly confused. Since he was a user-in-training, why was he able to level up?

Was this like a public beta test, and his level would be reset to zero?

Burying his questions, for now, Luo Su opened the ‘Skills and Equipment’ list. This was a very interesting list.

[Skills:]

[English Proficiency (You must realize that English does not merely consist of ‘Come on,’ ‘Oh yes,’ ‘Oh my God’)]

[Long-Distance Runner (You can run your enemy to death)]

[Seizing and Grappling Art (Not bad)]

[Poison Tongue (Always the one to end conversations)]

[Equipment:]

[Character Card: Bolt (Although he’s a called a flying man, his speed per hour is merely 37.6 kilometers, which is just a matter of pressing a little harder on the gas pedal)]

[Character Guard: Temple Guard (A monster guarding an idol)]

[Character Card: Subway Police Officer (Not even a jet can throw off this middle-aged uncle. It’s said that he used to be part of the Delta Force)]

[Item Card: Liniment x3 (For treating arthritis of the limbs and alleviating rheumatism and muscle ache. By dissolving some in hot water and breathing in the steam, it can also treat colds and stuffy noses)]

[Item Card: Blood-Absorbent Bandages (Inside are one hundred small absorbent pillows that can rapidly stop blood loss)]

In front were the names of the skills and equipment, and in the back were the system’s evaluations of them. While in a Mission World and at the end of each Mission World, there would be a prize-pulling stage. Luo Su had gotten everything besides the grappling technique and the Poison Tongue from this lottery.

Luo Su hadn’t won many rewards, and the system had only given one or two lines of explanation. Through his own tests, he had determined a few things about these lottery rewards.

There were two kinds of skills: one-time and permanent. English Proficiency and Long-Distance Runner were permanent skills. He had also previously pulled a one-time skill called ‘Fire Spitting,’ which he had used in the ‘Escape from the Temple’ world, The effect hadn’t been bad, igniting the monster guardian into a ball of fire.

And then he had been chased by a fireball the rest of the way!

The Character Cards were a scam. The system that using a Character Card would grant him the ability of the character within, but these cards had a time limit, but the exact time was up to luck. It could be ten seconds or ten minutes.

Yes, the upper limit was ten minutes. There was no permanent here.

Of course, one could also use Wealth to extend the time, but you pay by the second, and the more powerful the character, the more Wealth it cost.

This made Luo Su suspect that this was a system with in-app purchases. Alas, he had not been able to find a place where he could load money.

The last was Item Cards. The system was incredibly tight-lipped about them, and Luo Su had not tried to use them. But based on the system’s descriptions of ‘Liniment’ and ‘Blood-Absorbent Bandages,’ the Item cards were an even bigger scam than the skills and Character Cards. Trying them or not probably made no difference.

By the time he exited the screen, the cigarette had burned almost the end. Luo Su, not caring that he had only taken a few puffs, extinguished the cigarette in the ashtray, stood up, and began to stretch his arms and legs.

Until he entered the Mission World, the system wouldn’t tell him what world it was. If it was like the other two worlds, he was in for a very long run. A warm-up was absolutely necessary.

[User, please note that the third Mission World is about to begin. This is your one-minute warning. Please make your preparations!]

When only one minute was left, Luo Su stopped his warm-up and took two sips of water from the cup on his table. He then sat back on the chair. When he opened his eyes again, the world before him had transformed.

There was no pitch-black monster with a mask of white bone, nor was there a middle-aged police officer with a big beer belly. This time, there was no one nipping at his heels. He stood on the roof of a skyscraper.

At his side were four foreigners with golden hair and blue eyes, and all of them, including himself, were dressed as workmen…if one ignored the firearms peeking out from their knapsacks and the malicious looks in their eyes.

Luo Su glanced at the Mk. 11 sniper rifle in his hand and then at the black and white picture with a red ‘X’ on it next to him and helplessly said, “I said before, I hate assassins!”
