Nina stood up, ready to leave the office.

When she reached the door, she stopped and turned back to speak to Algernon. “Mr. Belloc, I’m sorry that my admission has made you uncomfortable. However, I hope you will believe that I will make the most out of this admission slot.”

Nina’s attitude impressed Algernon.

He looked at the document in his hand and suddenly remembered Blumer’s arrangement. “Our LG General Hospital is currently participating in a project on human genetic experiments. The research is carried out in our medical school, and the professor that transferred over recently just happens to be lacking an assistant. I suggest you try it.

“Participating in this project might help you improve faster. What do you think?”

Nina nodded after some consideration. “I’d love to.”

This was indeed a rare opportunity, and Nina had no reason to refuse.

Algernon handed Nina a phone number before she left the office.

It was honestly a little different from how she had imagined reporting for school would have been like. It seemed like there was a misunderstanding between Blumer and Algernon.

Nina dialed the number on the note outside the office. The call went through, and a young voice sounded on the other end of the phone. It sounded familiar.

“Huston.”

“Hello, I’m an assistant arranged by Professor Algernon. My name is—”

“I’m at the lab building. B12 lab. Come and find me.” The professor seemed to be busy and did not have time to talk to Nina.

He hung up.

Nina went to the laboratory building and found the B12 laboratory quickly.

Fine, it was not easy to get there at all, and she could not reach B12 quickly either.

LG Medical School’s laboratory building had always been used as a professional research and development center for the LG General Hospital. Only students who were participating in research projects were allowed to enter the building.

In addition, they would only have access to the respective laboratories relevant to their projects.

Students who wanted to participate in these research projects required approval from professors who were conducting the experiments.

Hence, the building was not only full of important research and development but also confidential information.

This was indeed a good opportunity for Nina.

However, Nina was stopped at the entrance of the laboratory building because she had no entry pass.

She called the young professor immediately and informed him of her situation.

He said in a listless tone that carried a hint of annoyance, “Algernon’s efficiency is really getting worse. How did he arrange this… Wait for me. I’ll send someone down to pick you up.”

Soon, a woman in a white coat came downstairs to pick up Nina.

She looked like she was in her mid-20s. Her hair was tied up neatly behind her head, and a pair of black-framed glasses sat on her nose. However, the glasses could not conceal the woman’s elegance and beauty.

“Hello, I’m Arlene Beadle. You can call me Arlene. I’m the research assistant for the atavism experiment.” When they walked upstairs, the woman walked in front in her high heels. She also did not look back at Nina when she introduced herself.

“Nina Jowett.”

“Mhm.” The woman hummed in response and did not say anything else.

When they arrived on the second floor, the woman handed Nina a white coat. “Although there’s no need for any aseptic technique in the external laboratory, our uniform has to be standardized.”

Nina entered the B12 laboratory and realized that it was huge even though she was only standing in the external working area of the laboratory.

There was a large glass wall opposite her which showed a sterile laboratory inside. The researchers inside were all walking around in sterile suits.

Arlene picked up the intercom phone and explained the situation.

A voice came over the intercom. “Bring her in.”

Arlene brought Nina to change into a sealed sterile suit and surgical mask. They also had to walk through a disinfection tunnel when they entered the sterile lab.

A few researchers were busy inside.

Arlene led Nina behind a man. “Professor, I brought her in.”

The man let out a grunt of acknowledgment and was too busy to care about Nina.

“Biochemical assessment of seminal plasma. Normal.

“Routine semen analysis. Normal.

“Prostatic fluid test. Normal.

“The reproductive endocrine functions are normal.”

A researcher reported a set of results in an orderly manner.

Nina listened quietly, feeling a little uncertain about the experiment.

After a while, the professor turned around. Nina couldn’t see his face because he was wearing a sterile suit and a mask.

She was about to introduce herself when the professor said, “Your main task is to cooperate with me by recording, organizing, and summarizing the contents of the experiment. Any questions?”

“No problem,” said Nina.

“Good.” He beckoned Nina and led her to another lab inside. Several naked men were lying there, but their important parts were covered with a white cloth.

“These are our volunteers, and of course, we do pay our volunteers for participating in the experiment. Our research is called the genetic atavism experiment. Research has shown that human genes have been deteriorating. Obesity has worsened physique, athletic performance has weakened, immunity has decreased, adaptability to changes in the environment has decreased, mental illnesses have increased, and some organs have degenerated.”

The man’s voice sounded increasingly familiar to Nina.
