Beautiful?

Few people commented on Nina’s looks.

At the very least, her adoptive father had never commented on it, and it was even more so for the people around her in the past.

Nina found this comment refreshing.

“Thank you.”

“Where are you from?” Beth wanted to know more about her roommate.

“Hommes,” replied Nina.

Beth laughed. “I’ve heard about Hommes! I heard it’s a particularly rich and beautiful town and that your green lake is stunning. Is that true?”

Nina shrugged. “Actually, I only arrived at Hommes two days ago. My mother and stepfather live there.”

Beth was confused. “So, where did you live before?”

Nina gathered her belongings. “A small place in Maine. You might not have heard of it. I’m going to collect the blankets and everything. Do you know where it is?”

Beth nodded quickly. “I’ll go with you.”

“Thanks,” said Nina.

Beth playfully complained, “It’s okay! I’m looking forward to being best friends with you. Oh my God, did you know? I’ve been alone for two whole semesters in the first year. It was as if I was staying in a single room and couldn’t experience the joy of living in a dorm.”

A look of hesitation crossed Nina’s face. “Best friends?”

Beth stared at Nina like she was an alien. “Oh my God! Don’t tell me you’ve never had a best friend?”

“It’s a girl who’s very close to you. So close that you can tell each other your secrets.”

Telling secrets?

Nina instinctively felt repulsed. “I don’t need it,” she said flatly.

She had a hand in her pocket and stood straight. Her gait was relaxed and casual as if she was an officer patrolling the ranks or a king surveying his territory. Her gaze was deep and calm.

Nonetheless, Beth sensed this thing called loneliness from Nina.

Moreover, she felt that her new roommate was so pure in certain aspects that it was adorable.

Beth decided to change the subject. “Have you ever liked anyone? I mean men.”

Nina shook her head.

Beth didn’t understand. “How is that possible? Have you never met someone that made your heart pound?”

Nina tilted her head to look at her. “Made my heart pound?”

Beth nodded. “Like he makes your heart beat faster, and you can’t help but miss him… Oh, come on! How could you possibly even need me to explain all of this? Don’t tell me you haven’t even watched a TV show like this before?”

“I don’t watch TV much.” Nina gave it some serious thought. “Does it count if it was under the influence of drugs? I mean the heart beating faster.”

Beth covered her face with her hands. If her roommate wasn’t deliberately teasing her, then she was genuinely weird.

At the dormitory’s collection point, Nina collected her bedding items and followed Beth back to their room.

Nina was making her bed while Beth was on the phone with Eddie.

Suddenly, Beth covered the mouthpiece and asked Nina, “Eddie has a friend who is going to treat at the bar tonight and wants me to bring two more girls. Would you like to come with me?”

Nina unscrewed a bottle of mineral water. “Is this considered a regular college student gathering?”

Beth was confused by the question, but she nodded.

Nina tapped her chin. “I can try.”

Beth said happily into the mouthpiece, “Nina agreed. We’ll go over tonight together.”

Nina and Beth left the school at eight in the evening.

Beth was dolled up carefully, and she wore a long black dress. She removed her glasses and replaced them with contact lenses. She also used a concealer to cover the freckles on her face.

She looked extremely stunning.

Nina was still wearing her black T-shirt and slacks. She didn’t have much luggage actually, and her backpack contained only two sets of changeable clothes.

This was one of them.
