I Refuse To Be A Flower - Chapter 4

Before, the seventeen-years-old Pamela was a naive little girl. Although she has grown unusually bold and could say these things to her godfather and mother, unfortunately, at the time, she didn’t know how people considered her mother’s line of job.

What would happen if an ignorant girl was suddenly thrown into reality? The result was apparent. Pamela naturally drifted away from others. Being alone, she was the target of harassment which became natural over time. Then two people reached out to her. One of them was Anella Kleina.

“Oh no! Isn’t that the Count Kleina’s daughter?”

The godfather, who confirmed the Count’s logo carved in the carriage, turned pale and soon spouted honorifics to the girl.

“Do you know me?”

His body bent deeply until he nearly hit the ground. The girl, who came down from the carriage, asked.

“I’m Viscount Harman.”

“Viscount Harman? Are you one of my father’s guests? I don’t remember you.”

The godfather’s eyebrows flinched at the girl’s question. Her words were a jab to the nobleman’s pride.

Still, the godfather kept his respectful bow in front of the Count’s daughter.

Holding back her smile, Pamela decided to watch quietly.

“Yes. I’ve been to the mansion a few times as the Count’s guest.”

“Oh, I see. I’m sorry I didn’t remember.”

“No, the young miss was very young. No wonder you don’t remember.”

“Is that so?”

Pamela could feel a huge wall of status between them when she saw her and it felt even more distant since she was a mere commoner.

“By the way, what about you?”

Then the girl’s gaze turned to Pamela, who was standing next to the godfather. Only then did godfather, who had noticed her existence, look at Pamela.

The godfather blushed with shame at the fact that Pamela had seen his pathetic side. Pamela deliberately ignored his glare and greeted the girl with courtesy.

“Hello, young miss. My name is Pamela.”

“Oh my.”

Anella’s face revealed a startled expression at her introduction. Usually, when introducing oneself, nobles would use their last names. However, Pamela had no last name since she was a commoner.

If it wasn’t for her introduction, Anella would have thought that she was the same aristocrat as she is although her dress was not fancy nor fit for a higher-standing noble.

Initially, Pamela, a commoner, was not allowed to be in front of her, the Count’s daughter. Nevertheless, Pamela decided to take a bold decision and pretended to be ignorant. She kept her stance and faced the young girl. Pamela knew Anella was a girl who took notice of the common people parallel to other aristocrats.

“Nice to meet you, Miss Pamela. My name is Anella Kleina.”

“Nice to meet you too, Miss.”

Pamela bowed her head once again. The sudden appearance of Anella calmed Pamella’s confused mind. Seeing the young girl made her felt nostalgic.

She turned her gaze to the godfather, who was now staring at her. After her greeting, he immediately pulled Pamela’s arm away. Unlike his smiling face, he drew her hands roughly.

He was initially not happy because of Pamela’s defiance earlier, even more so since Pamela caught him in that shameful scene!

His insides were boiling with rage.

Ten years ago, the man went out alone after the carriage accident and he returned in the state full of anger.

At that time, Pamela was waiting in the carriage until the godfather returned. Upon returning into the carriage, he vented his anger onto Pamela.

Inside, he immediately slapped Pamela’s cheeks, who was sitting in front of him. Her previous self was terrified at the sudden violence. She had been terrified on the way to the convent.

She didn’t know why she got slap then, but now she understood that Anella Kleina had irritated him. If they went back to the carriage like this, Pamela would face her godfather’s wrath without any doubt.

But no, this time it’ll be different.

‘What am I going to do?’

Pamela looked at the godfather pulling her harshly towards the carriage and turned her head to Anella Kleina. Fortunately, Anella was looking at her, so it was easy to see and hear her.

“Miss, I apologize beforehand, although I’ve never met you, but I have a favor to ask.”

Pamela’s favor that came out of sudden didn’t disarrange Anella’s composure as she quickly replied with a gentle smile.

“Sure, what can I do for you?”

“Thank you. It won’t be a difficult request.”

“You can tell me.”

Pamela also smiled at Anella while she slipped off Harman’s hold.

“If you don’t mind, would you please take me with you?”

“Pamela!”

The godfather called her name urgently. His eyes wide open flabbergasted by Pamela’s brazen attitude.

However, Pamela didn’t even look at him.

“Godfather, I’m afraid you’ll need to get your carriage repaired.”

“Well…”

“Godfather, you have the time to wait until it’s finished, but today is my first day in the convent. I don’t think being late will be a good first impression.”

Anella seemed a little surprised, but unlike Harman, she remained calm.

Instead, an even brighter smile was directed at Pamela.

“Oh, my. I was also on my way to the convent.”

‘I know that.’

“Really? What a coincidence.”

“Let’s go together then.”

‘Success!’ Pamela cried with joy inside her heart.

“Pamela! How can you be this rude to the young miss!”

But the joy, for a moment, was interrupted by the godfather, who was watching the conversation between the two.

“But, godfather…”

“Are you complaining to me ?!”

Eventually, he couldn’t hold back his anger. Pamela sighed inwardly, but on the outside, she pretended to be afraid of the godfather shouting at her. When Pamela flinched noticeably, the angry godfather looked at Anella.

Anella, who was staring at the two, had a stiff face.

“Pamela, you can’t be a nuisance to the young miss. The carriage can be repaired, you will go later. Let’s go!”

The godfather pulled Pamela’s arm again. If this continued, it won’t end with a few hits from him.

Nothing would work to ease his anger, who was really angry. Holding back her pained impression, she turned her head toward Anella and mouthed.

“Take me with you.”

“Come!” her godfather dragged her forcefully to the carriage.

Anella, who was looking at Pamela’s mouth, cautiously opened her mouth.

“Sir Harman? Please wait for a moment.”

The godfather’s step stopped in its track at the call.

Compared with the old carriage, the count’s carriage was very luxurious. The entire chair and the cushions on the backrest were soft, and the carpet, seamed with an exotic pattern, had a sophisticated feel. The carriage curtains in dark red gave off a luxurious feel making the whole ride even more satisfactory.

Most of all, she didn’t have to see the godfather with his disgusting smells, taking up the narrow space with his huge body.

Anella was worried gaze couldn’t help but land on Pamela’s face.

“I’m sure you were surprised.”

“I’d be lying if I say I weren’t surprised.”

A little while ago, Anella stated that she would take Pamela with her. It was evident that the godfather was mad. Even his mother, who heard the news, came out of the carriage and gave her an unspoken glance.

But the two girls moved their luggage silently. The godfather, who could not overcome his anger, opened the carriage’s door and went in with her mother trailing behind him.

‘I’m sorry, mother, but it must be difficult to appease godfather today.’

“Thank you for listening to my request.”

“It wasn’t that difficult. Moreover…”

Anella covered her mouth with her hand. It was a habit that came out when she thought about something or thought deeply about it.

“What kind of relationship do you have with Mr. Harman?”

“He’s my godfather.”

Pamela glanced out of the window and took her eyes off the sun, which began to glow brightly Anella’s gaze, sitting opposite, was caught between Pamela and the floor of the carriage. She seemed to be confused about where to look.

“I don’t know if I can ask you this, Miss Pamela…”

Anella said very carefully. Understanding what she was curious about, Pamela answered the unspoken question.

“I’m a commoner. That’s why I have no last name.”

“You’re not an illegitimate daughter?”

“My mother is his concubine, but I was born before my mother met with Harman.”

Pamela’s mother, Rachel, was a woman whose job was to please men.

“I don’t know who my father is. Must be one of the many men she’s met.”

“…”

“Is it okay that you give a ride to a commoner?”

“…”

“I mean you are a count’s daughter after all.”

Pamela looked into her eyes,
Unlike Pamela’s pure purple-colored eyes, her eyes were warm and green colored. Anella shook her head in response.

“It’s okay, I offered you a ride after all.”

“I see.”

The two girls were left in the silence again. Soon, the carriage that passed the longwall entered the gate.

The carriage passed through buildings constructed out of white brick and eventually stopped in front of the convent dormitory.

“It looks like we’ve arrived.”

“Yes.”

The two got off the carriage together. Outside the dormitory was bustling with people carrying luggage just like the two.

The convent strictly prohibited men from entering.
However, today was an exception, licensed carry-on workers were allowed in to aid the girls who entered the convent, but initially, no horsemen and carriages were allowed in and out.

“Welcome, ladies.”

Suddenly, from the crowded dormitory building, with several carriages gathered, came the sound of an old woman’s.

The woman, who came out of the door, was wearing a dark-colored dress that covered her whole body except her head and hands. Her stern look was solidified with the thin glasses resting on her bent nose.

“I’m the head of the convent here, Cabine. Please call me, Mother.”

It was then she stopped looking back at the girls greeting her with blank faces and directly looked at Anella.

“You must be the daughter of Count Kleina. I heard the news from the count, welcome.”

“Thank you.”

Anella bowed her head.

There was a little smile on Mother’s face before she turned towards Pamela and, “Who’s here with you?”
“I’m Pamela. Mother.”

“Pamela? So it was you. The daughter of the lowly prostitute.
