Grunting under his breath, Lu Zhanxiu got up and left.
“Young Mr. Lu…” Yan Susu rose from her chair as well and addressed him quietly, looking flustered.
Lu Zhanxiu turned around, his face thunderous. “Mrs. Lu is really creative. Even the way you address your husband is unusual.”
Yan Susu wondered, did Young Mr. Lu not like her using that term to address him?
“If Mrs. Lu has nothing to say to me, then I, the young Mr., will go to work,” Lu Zhanxiu announced, emphasizing the words “young Mr.,” obviously in reference to the way Yan Susu had been saying “Young Mr. Lu.”
“Lu…Mr. Lu?” After some hesitation, Yan Susu changed the way she addressed him.
She had barely finished speaking when Lu Zhanxiu, his expression even more frosty, asked, “What is it, Miss Yan?”
He had even stopped calling her Mrs. Lu…a clear sign that he disliked the new form of address even more.
Yan Susu bit her lip. She was still at a loss as to how she should address this new husband of hers. Eventually, she decided to do away with the formalities and get directly to the point.
“This afternoon, I will go on my own to pick up Lu Xingguang. Is that OK with you?”
Lu Zhanxiu simply grunted softly, intent on disregarding her.
Not knowing what to do next, Yan Susu simply stood there, like a child who had just been caught out and scolded.
“Madam, please take a rest now. I will arrange for the car to be ready.”
At the housekeeper’s words, Yan Susu smiled gratefully. “Thank you, Housekeeper.”

“Pretty Wife?” Lu Xingguang shouted happily in surprise, taking big strides with his little legs and charging towards Yan Susu.
As she watched the boy, his face shining brightly like the sun, running towards her with a brilliant smile, Yan Susu’s heart was warmed by a surge of emotion, and she smiled, too. “Slow down, don’t rush.”
Charging straight into her arms, Lu Xingguang looked at her with shiny eyes. “Pretty Wife, are you here to pick me up? How did you know I was here? You like me very much too, right? Did you miss me a lot…?”
Pretty Wife smelled extremely nice, unlike other women, who smelled of perfumes pungent enough to kill.
Yan Susu waited patiently for Lu Xingguang to finish asking his questions before responding gently, “Yes, I’m here to pick you up from school. I have something to tell you.”
“Pretty Wife, what have you got to say to me? That you realize that you like me a lot, too, and want to date me, right?” Just the thought of it made Lu Xingguang extremely happy.
Yan Susu’s heart lurched at that look of anticipation on his little face, and she could not bring herself to put into words what she had to say.
Sensing that something was amiss, Lu Xingguang felt a little uneasy. He asked, “Pretty Wife, what is it? Are you not well? Shall I take you to the hospital?”
Although he hated hospitals, he would have to be brave for his pretty wife. He had to be a man!
Quietly ruffling his soft hair, Yan Susu made an effort to appear more gentle. “Do you like me?”
“Yes, I do. I like you lots. So, will you promise to marry me?”
“Then what if…I were to marry your father and be your mother…?”
She had not even completed her sentence when Lu Xingguang’s expression transformed completely. “No, I don’t want that!”
Stepmothers were the worst. They would bully him, hit him!

“I hate you. Stop following me!” Lu Xingguang yelled as he kept running. He did not notice the car that had suddenly appeared.
