Gaining A Husband After a Memory Loss - Chapter 34.1

GHML – Chapter 34.1: Confession (1)

The security guard was stunned by He Jiang’s request. It was then did he realize he did not see He Jiang come home last night.

The dots started to connect in his head.

So… Mr.Shang bought the cake to celebrate Mr.He’s birthday but since Mr.He did not come home, he decided to give the cake to us…?

His heart skipped a beat but it was for the homeowners.

“Aye, look at me, how was I so thick-skinned to eat the cake? I was just thinking how Mr.Shang looked a little upset when he came by last night. I hope everything is well, do make sure to console and cheer him up. The packaging of the cake has been collected by the housekeeping team this morning. Why don’t I repurchase another cake for you?”

“It’s fine, there’s no need for that,” He Jiang refused. Instead, he reached out and cut out three slices of cake.

Even though the sponge cake and cream still had a sweet fragrance to it, the diced strawberries and mangoes had lost their initial luster together with the decorative flowers which looked a little deformed, and the nuts had lost their crunch.

Regardless, He Jiang proceeded to vacuum-seal and store them in the cold room of his city-center apartment with the help of Xiao Bei.

There was no purpose in redeeming an expired birthday cake.

He merely wanted them to remind himself to never leave Puppy Shang alone ever again.

Without any prompting, he transferred payment for the cakes to the security guard but was quickly rejected by the latter.

“You’ve just taken three slices of your own birthday cake. How can I accept payment from you?”

He Jiang: “Just keep it. It’s not just for the cake, I hope you can keep this matter a secret too.”

In the meantime, Shang Jing was on his way back to the villa when his handphone vibrated. It was a phone call from Dr.Bo Ya.

Could there be some breakthrough with regards to my treatment plan?

Shang Jing quickly accepted the call.

There was a tinge of urgency in Bo Ya’s voice. He asked, “Mr.Shang, I saw some articles floating on the internet about you being brought to the states by your Mother when you were six years old. Is that true?”

Due to his memory loss, Shang Jing was not sure of that himself. But if things were as He Jiang said and he was brought up in the States, the possibility of his Mother leaving the country with him after selling their house was high.

“Seems like it.”

Bo Ya: “I have a Cousin whom I lost contact with after he was brought out of the country following his Father’s death. His mother’s surname is Shang. If you don’t mind me asking, could that Cousin I’m referring to be you?”

Shang Jing was stunned by the question. To confirm, he asked, “Where did your cousin live previously?”

The first time Bo Ya met him at the hospital, he had asked him whether he had grown up in the states. At that time, he was so sure he had nothing to do with the US.

After all, it was only natural for him to assume himself to be a local-bred with his fluency in the Chinese language, his love for dumplings and his dislike of Western food.

But after seeing He Jiang’s Weibo post, he was brought to the realization that it could be because of the nine years of compulsory education he had put himself through like all other Chinese citizens.

Bo Ya uttered an address, the address of his old family home that was sold away.

A scene flashed before Shang Jing’s eyes. It was a memory from a long time ago when he was barely ten years old.

It was the day his mother regarded him icily with an envelope in her hands.

“Your uncle has succumbed to his illness and passed away. You don’t have any more kin left in the country to take you in.”

Little Shang Jing was crying his eyes out.

Was uncle alive all this while?

Shang Jing closed his eyes. Things were happening so fast, he did not know who to believe and what to believe. All he wanted to do now was to seek advice from He Jiang, but at the same time he felt the pressing need to detach himself from him.

How do I know whether He Jiang is the one lying to me or not?

Bo Ya seemed to understand his hesitation and offered up more information. “Most of my childhood days were spent furthering my education abroad with my mother which resulted in minimal interaction between us. However, my father does have a group photo as proof of our relations. Give me a moment, I’ll get my father to send it over.”

Two minutes later, Shang Jing received the group photo Bo Ya was talking about. It was taken in the premise of a living room with him, his father and a man that resembled his father. It was easy to tell the two men were brothers.

Shang Jing had an inkling the living room was a part of his old family home.

Shang Jing: “Let’s talk after we meet.”

Shang Jing: “Lin Lin, please stop the car by the roadside. I have a friend I have to go meet now.”

Having overheard his conversation with Bo Ya, even though she was glad he was able to reconcile with a kin, she could not help feeling worried about it being a scam.

After all, appearing on the variety show had multiplied Shang Jing’s net worth by many folds, and Bo Ya was one of the few people who knew about his amnesia situation. If he were to set up a trap specially for Shang Jing, it would be easy as hell.

“I’ll send you there,” Lin Lin offered, then threw in a reminder, “Dr.Bo is one of the few people who knows about your amnesia. You can’t trust what he says fully. It will be better to not expose too much of your personal information to him.”

Shang Jing: “I’ll make sure to keep anything related to He Jiang a secret.”

Lin Lin smiled. “I’m not worried about He Jiang’s privacy, I’m worried about you.”

Shang Jing: “Thank you, Lin Lin.”
