Extraordinary Voyage - Chapter 4

Seeing how he was about to suffer the same fate as his partner because of his carelessness, Graham’s eyes narrowed and felt that he was about to die in the next instant.

“Bark, bark, bark…”

The black hound pounced in front of its owner when it sensed danger.

Bamp!

“Aw… Aw…”

The brave hound was far from being the beast’s match. It flew after being struck by the beast and moaned in pain after it landed on the ground.

However, its move helped Graham as he managed to roll on the ground and avoid the deadly attack by the beast. He barely made it out alive with a small abrasion on his arm.

He fell on the ground without any sound. The black lynx was about to attack again as it sensed that Graham had no energy to defend anymore.

Whoosh!

An arrow pierced through the air.

Bam! It landed between the lynx and Graham. The speed and force caused the arrow to pierce through the ground, leaving only the feathers of the arrow vibrating above the ground.

The black lynx got a shock and turned to look at the direction where the arrow came from. Its bright, yellow eyes hesitated as it opened its wings and disappeared into a big tree.

Graham felt joy after realizing that someone had come to rescue him. He breathed heavily and stood up from the ground.

“Thank you, brother, for saving my life!”

His hound also got up and ran towards Graham.

“You too, old buddy Jim! You are my savior.”

Alvin took out a roll of bandages for Graham. He asked in a low voice, “Did you see what it was?”

“It’s a black lynx. Earlier on…” Graham told Alvin the entire encounter furiously as he wrapped the bandages around his injury.

“Moreover, it was very fast and sly. Colin was bitten to death as he was not taking any precautions. If I had not given chase because I was worried that it would escape, and I had instead waited for the rest to come and help, we could have killed it.”

“Alvin, let’s kill it together!”

“No, Graham! We better leave. I don’t think it is a lynx.” Alvin frowned after pausing and said, “It should be a berserk wild beast!”

After being taught by the old Butler Leo, Alvin’s understanding of this world was beyond that of an ordinary hunter.

Their ancestors had probably encountered berserk wild beasts before but did not have the chance to return to relay the experience to their future generations.

Perhaps the upper class of Leopold knew about it. However, because of the differences in classes, they decided not to pass the information to the lower classes of society.

This was why Alvin was fortunate to be born into his family. If he had been born as an ordinary villager, he would be having a tough life and probably would not even understand what the world was like after he had grown up.

Based on his Data Vision and Graham’s description, it was most likely a berserk lynx.

“Lynx?” Graham could not believe it.

He knew what a lynx was. It would be easily spotted by a hunter. However, it was just a mid-sized creature that was less than half of a human’s size. It was completely different from a beast that was able to leap with a human in its mouth.

It was difficult for Alvin to explain it to Graham, who did not have any special powers. Berserk creatures were originally ordinary animals, but they transformed due to some mysterious genes in the world. If they survived, they would become a berserk creature that was extraordinary in size, speed, strength, and intelligence.

Such creatures had always existed.

Based on what Leo said, humans had invented various training techniques and potions after researching such creatures. This allowed them to berserk their bodies and become powerful knights.

The difference was that the animals turned passively, while humans initiated it themselves. Humans were much more powerful than their animal counterparts.

A lynx was able to turn into a fierce beast that was bigger than a leopard. Moreover, because of the process, ordinary humans were unable to win the fight against it.

Regrettably, the ordinary humans included Alvin, the apprentice knight

“Perhaps it was faking its escape. Berserk creatures are also extremely intelligent, so we should not underestimate them.”

Alvin realized that he was in a predicament. If he had known that Graham had encountered a berserk wild beast, he would not have come over. Both of them would definitely lose to the berserk wild beast.

As for why he was able to scare the beast away with an arrow, Alvin guessed that it was a natural reflex of the lynx.

“Then… we should go back now. I will report this to the city hall and the people in charge will send special troops to kill it.”

Hunters would naturally retreat instead of fighting head-on. Graham knew that he should retreat first and let the professionals settle it afterwards.

“Bark, bark, bark…”

Just as the trio took a few steps, Jim suddenly ran forward and barked furiously at the trees.

Graham and Alvin looked at each other and smiled bitterly when they saw the lynx walk towards them.

“Let’s fight!”

Since the beast did not want to let him off, Alvin was triggered and walked forward as he drew his sword.

Bravery would ensure one wins the battle. Alvin knew that.

“Hold on, Alvin,” said Graham suddenly and quickly.

“Maybe we have a chance to win. I might not know everything, but since I grew up in this forest, I know that all the lynxes have dark fur on their ears. However, this one doesn’t! Look, it doesn’t!”

Alvin’s eyesight was better than Graham’s, which was why he discovered that earlier than Graham. However, he was not as experienced as Graham.

Both of them felt slightly more relieved.

As a lynx that had yet to grow up completely, it was not extremely daring yet. However, after waiting for a while, it realized that the two humans were not as powerful as it had thought. It decided to attack instead of waiting any further.

Alvin made a hand sign and then walked towards the lynx.

He stood five steps away from the lynx and squated slightly as he held his sword, bringing the sword to his eyeline. He posed with the White Sail Sword Technique.

The White Sail Sword Technique was an extraordinary sword technique used by the Garriotts’ ancestors. It originated from techniques used in battles on water and was perfected by sword masters.

It had become a powerful sword technique after being passed down through many generations to Alvin.

Although Alvin did not understand why the lynx had appeared willingly, he decided to test it out and walked slowly towards it with his longsword.

“Sshh!”

The lynx was clearly more powerful than an experienced and patient hunter. Just as Alvin walked into its attack zone, it pounced towards him.

“Argh!”

Alvin darted nimbly and shouted as he turned. He stomped his right foot and transferred all his energy to the sword he was holding and attacked.

It was a perfect attack that nearly pierced through the lynx’s spine.

The lynx reacted very quickly and did not dart.

Huge but extremely agile, the lynx used its powerful legs and leaped into the sky again. It leaped past the sword and then pounced towards Alvin again.

Alvin followed the sword’s momentum and turned several rounds on the ground, allowing him to avoid the lynx while getting further away from it.
